Description
It had been a long day at the house. Just as Kornari thought Dez had come home for the day, she watched him open a letter from the day’s mail pile and sigh. Her ears perked, and head tilted, “What’s that Dez?”
The red behemoth gave her a warm smile as he pat her on the head, speaking both to her and their roommate Castiel, “Last minute special order for the forge, I’ve got some work to get done while there’s still some light out. Do you think you could-?”
“Keep an eye on the little one?” Castiel gave a teasing glare from his chair by the fireplace, “Of course Dez. But you have to promise me something…”
“Okay Cas, I’ll pick up some extra fruit on my way back.” Deszeld chuckled and turned to head out the door.
“Dez…” Castiel folded his book into his lap and leaned onto the arm of the chair. “You know that’s not what I meant. You really need to slow down working at that forge. This daily grind you’ve gotten yourself into is working you to the bone, and honestly I worry if it’s stunting your growth.”
Dez sighed as he opened the door. “I know Cas, I promise, after this order I’ll spend more time at home. Take a break once in awhile,” he turned to give a wink to Kornari, “Sound good?”
She gave him a massive beaming smile. “We’ll see you soon Dez!”
“I’m holding you to that you overgrown puckoo.” Castiel smirked as he went back to reading his book.
Kornari followed Deszeld from the window and watched as he rounded the bend, strangely stopping for a minute to speak. “Hey, Uncle Cas? I think Dez found another wyngro in the woods!”
Castiel looked over towards the window and began to stand.
“Oh, nevermind! He moved.”
“Must have been admiring the clouds.” Castiel chuckled as he sat back down. “I’ve almost finished with this chapter, give me a few more minutes and then we can have some playtime, alright?”
“Yay! Magic show!” Kornari squealed in delight as she ran off to gather her toys.
The day went by uneventful and slow, and after some time Kornari asked if Castiel would read her a story. Naturally he obliged, but somehow managed to read himself to sleep before the wyngling. She gave him some time to settle before sliding off his lap to gather up her favorite doll and head back to her room. It was really both her and Deszeld’s room, but for the past few weeks he had been coming home late from the forge and, choosing not to wake her, sleeping in front of the fire place at night. Her thoughts drifted from the monster slaying princess in front of her, over to the big red tank they lived with.
Their relationship had been confusing, to say the least, up to this point. He was very much a father-figure to her but refused to be called ‘Dad’. Things only got more confusing when ‘Uncle Cas’ was added in to the mix. She knew they weren’t related, and Castiel was more a ‘friend-uncle’ but she still didn’t understand why Deszeld got so defensive whenever she brought up the ‘Dad’ subject. He either avoided the topic completely or entirely defused each situation with a distraction. She had only let it slip a few times, and always managed to catch herself, nonetheless, Dez never got mad over it. More, wistful.
Her ears perked as she heard the front door handle jiggling and swinging open slowly, “Hey…” a familiar voice spoke softly, almost broken, “Anyone still awake in here?”
The young wyngling failed to contain her excitement as she scrambled back towards the front door, whizzing past a slowly waking Castiel, “Welcome home, Daddy!” she giggled as she ran and threw her forearms around his neck as best she could, “I missed you so much!”
Castiel’s eyes widened at the words, his mouth opening to say something but the words getting stuck in his throat.
Then it happened.
Something inside Deszeld just, snapped. The stress from the forge, the wyngro he found in the woods, and his own doubts of himself all spilling out into the wrong place. He reached up with a single paw and pushed the wyngling off him.
“For Chii’s sake Kori, stop calling me ‘Dad’!” His teeth ground together as he began to bark, “I know we’re a family and things have been different but this needs to stop. There’s a reason we tell you not to and it’s as simple as; I’m. Not. Your. Dad.”
Kornari felt her eyes watering as she slowly backed away from him, her gut twisting in ways she had never felt before.
“DESZELD!” With one word from Castiel his scowl snapped away and his cheeks lost all color. “Outside. I’ll be there in a minute. Come on Kori, let’s get you to bed.”
“Kori I..-“ With no words the wyngling slowly turned away and began her walk back to her room, grabbing her doll from the floor on the way past.
I can’t believe I let it slip…
