Another experiment, I think I figured out why some textures don't play nice when compositing. Some pieces just look great with no extra time on my part, and others take hours.
This seems to be due to the flat color technique I use in my textures being inconsistent when applied to large low poly objects. Mixing in realistic textures results in this type of piece.
Imperfect, but progress.
