Description

"Our Lady, Queen of Ireland"
March 15th 2009
Pencil, India ink and Watercolors

Honestly, I've had this picture in my "To-Draw" Queue for a very long time. I started the sketch the day before school started way back in late summer. I got it finished just in time for saint Patick's Day though! But I wasn't able to post it since I've given up dA for Lent and in my diocese Saint Patrick's Day is not an official feast day. But St. Joseph's is! So that's why I'm posting it now.

I'm sure Our Lady has a very special place for Ireland in her heart, I'm sure she loves the Irish very much. (I mean, who can't? ) In fact, in 1879 she appeared in the Irish town of Knock, also known as "Cnoc Mhuire" or "Hill of the Virgin Mary." A basillica was erected and named "Our Lady, Queen of Ireland" in her honor. She is also known as Our Lady of Silence.

This is a statue of Our Lady of Knock: [link]

Here is a prayer to Our Lady of Knock:

Great Mary,
Greatest of Marys,
Greatest of Women,
Mother of Eternal Glory,
Mother of the Golden Light,
Honor of the Sky,
Temple of the Divinity,
Fountain of the Gardens,
Serene as the Moon,
Bright as the Sun,
Garden Enclosed,
Temple of the Living God,
Light of Nazareth,
Beauty of the World,
Queen of Life,
Ladder of Heaven,
Mother of God.
Pray for us.

Our Lady of Knock, Queen of Ireland, you gave hope to our people in a time of distress and comforted them in sorrow. You have inspired countless pilgrims to pray with confidence to your divine Son, remembering His promise: "Ask and you shall receive, Seek and you shall find". Help me to remember that we are all pilgrims on the road to heaven. Fill me with love and concern for my brothers and sisters in Christ, especially those who live with me. Comfort me when I am sick or lonely or depressed. Teach me how to take part ever more reverently in the holy Mass. Pray for me now, and at the hour of my death.
Amen.

Holy Mary, if thou wilt,
hear Thy supplicant;
I put myself under the
shelter of Thy shield.
When falling on
the slippery path
Thou art my smooth
supporting hand staff.
There is no hound in fleetness or in chase,
north wind or rapid river;
as quick as the Mother of Christ
to the bed of death,
to those who are entitled
to her kindly protection.
Amen.

Really nice. I like the braids on the frame and how it is incorporated into the drawing.

Brilliant job! Wonderful detail and amazing job on the Celtic knots. How long did it take you to do this?

Oh gosh....I can't really remember, it was so long ago. Ummmm...for all of the celtic knots? Maybe two hours tops. The whole picture might've taken something like 7 to 8 hours?

She is indeed! I love my Mama so much!!!

Greetings from the United States! I just find it so beautiful that our Christian faith is universal and more binding than any other allegience. First and foremost, I consider myself a Catholic. I love our Church, and I love all my brothers and sisters around the world who share as our spiritual Father the Holy Pontiff. May this Lent be most blessed for you and your family! May the Holy Family be with you in all joys and sorrows!

Golden Rose, Queen of Ireland, / all my cares and troubles cease / As I kneel in love before you / Lady of Knock, my Queen of peace!

TΓ‘ seo go hΓ‘llain! Is breΓ‘ liom na dathanna, go hairithe an Γ³r! B’fhΓ©idir ba cheart do Mhuire bheith nΓos chlΓ©, ach tΓ‘ sΓ© ceart go leor, cinnte! Go hΓontach, maith thΓΊ!

That is: This is lovely! I love the colours, especially the gold! Maybe Mary should be more to the left but it's allright, indeed! Wonderful, good for you!

As I'm doing my Irish homework as I finally start to make my way through my built-up devwatch, I thought a comment sa Ghaeilge would be appropriate. ~_^

Oh I've never heard that! It's pretty, I like it. ^ ^ Heheh, I love your Irish. Irish is such an amazing tongue, and I really love the way it looks! It just looks awesome. Awesome job with your homework and with your irish! I love it.

FireFiriel In reply to Theophilia [2009-08-09 20:03:15 +0000 UTC]

It's on the well-known 'Faith of our Fathers' CD, for one, and we sung it in church in Ireland. ^^

Btw, if you're interested, what I wrote would be pronounced: Tah show go hah-lun! Ees brah lum nuh dah-hunna, go har-ih-heh an or! Bay-der bah hkyart doh Wurra veh nees hklay, ahk tah shay kyart go lor, kinnta! Go heen-tahk, mah hoo!

When I say 'hk' I mean like a throaty almost coughing noise, HKH! like is common in Arabic and Hebrew. Yeah.

Thanks!

Theophilia In reply to FireFiriel [2009-08-10 15:01:36 +0000 UTC]

Oh, we do have that CD! Which song it?

And in German "ch", right? 'Tis such a fun sound to make. But before I learned German I had a hard time pronouncing it because I thought it was a phlegmy (sp?) kind of sound. It doesn't take NEARLY that much effort to make.

Yep!

FireFiriel In reply to Theophilia [2009-08-15 21:05:23 +0000 UTC]

Oh sorry, upon further inspection I find it's not on that CD, but on "Frank Patterson sing Sacred Songs of Ireland" which we also have, and I mix them up. My mistake.

I think that's the same sound. It is fun!
