with the moon under her feet
and upon her head a crown of twelve stars."

“O Mother of Chastity, our Queen and steadfast hope,
Remember us in thy prayers to Christ our God:
Be thou our help and sure defense, O Immaculate Lady,
That under the mantle of thine all-powerful intercession,
We may be protected from the venom of sin, temptation, and polluted thoughts.
Guard us, we pray thee, from all dangers and every evil.
For blessèd art thou by all generations, and we magnify thee unto ages of ages.
Through the prayers of the Most Holy Theotokos, O Savior save us!”

I was commissioned to make this piece for a client based on an image of Our Lady that impressed itself upon his mind while in prayer. This was the description he gave me:

“Our Blessed Mother stood upon the world,
Wearing a veil of snowy white,
Which covered her head and shoulders,
Crowned with three stars gold:
One upon her brow, two on her shoulders.
Beneath the lovely long veil pure,
Our Lady wore clothes of royal azure blue.

Her holy hands were lifted in prayer,
The Oranta prays for us and the world;
She desires all to be transfigured, restored,
And ascended to new grace-filled heights;
Christ our God shines forth from her womb,
Encircled by golden light, the Righteous Sun:
Our Good Shepherd, our Divine Physician.

With her beautiful right foot, our Mother
Stepped and crushed the serpent's head,
Stamping out temptation to save and protect
Her vulnerable children from its vile venom;
Round about her shone twelve brilliant stars,
With pure light that cleansed my heart’s eyes,
All arranged in a mandorla's mystical shape.”

He also asked that I depict Mary in a way similar to the Panagia Oranta with the addition of her holding up her veil as she does in the Holy Protection of the Theotokos icons . He is also an admirer of the Beuronese School so I took some inspiration for the mandorla from the mural of the Immaculate Conception in Conception Abbey, Missouri by Lukas Etlin . He asked that I add the Archangels Michael and Raphael on the side. Raphael holds a chalice, while Michael holds a sword.
