I recently finished this image for a client who commissioned it with the intention of making it into holy cards in order to spread a new devotion to the Eucharistic Lord under this title. They kindly provided me with a description of the image and its purpose for the benefit of my viewers:

"This image of the ‘Divine House Guest of Souls’ is part of a larger devotion given directly by our Lord Jesus Christ, to a Eucharistic adorer. Aspects of this devotion have recently been submitted for ecclesiastical approval to the Office of Canonical Affairs in the Archdiocese of Boston, Massachusetts. Once the Nihil Obstat and Imprimatur have been obtained, the devotion will be made available to parishes throughout the Archdiocese of Boston and beyond. It was in the silence of Eucharistic adoration that Our Lord spoke and taught the prayers and devotion of the ‘Divine House Guest of Souls’. Here He expressed His desire to have this image painted as part of the devotion.

In the image and prayer, our Lord is represented as the travelling Savior, who has long been out doing His work of salvation and sanctification. He comes upon a house looking for a place of rest for the night. Looking for hospitality and rest and refreshment. The image, and devotion, are based in Genesis 18 and the hospitality of Abraham and Sarah rendered to God. It is our Lord’s desire to be welcomed and attended to by every soul who receives Him in Holy Communion. The house in the image is the interior house of the soul. The scene then is the moment of reception of Holy Communion, of receiving the Divine Savior, Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity into one’s soul. The Consecrated Host above the house serves as a reminder of this central mystical reality.

The aim of the devotion is to provide, by all souls who receive Holy Communion, hospitality, welcome, attention, recollection, balm and love to the One who is Divine and who has given all of Himself to the soul. Our Lord has promised that souls who receive Him can become like another Abraham and another Sarah, meaning an intimate hospitable friend. It is this which is represented in the image. Another Abraham, another Sarah, another you, and me, welcoming our Eucharistic Lord with alacrity, joy, reverence and an understanding heart."
