This takes me back to art class where the teacher always said that colors are essential to determine mood. Well captured, my good sir.

Hey dude it's a great step in the right direction and it seems that person who helped you out is leading you on a good path so kudos to them. What seems to be an issue with this is that you're treating facial features and other areas as symbols instead of understanding how they form properly. This takes time to learn so don't be discouraged as we all have to start somewhere but understanding a more realistic approach will benefit your stylized works immensely. A starting place to fix this symbol drawing is to look up a book called "Drawing on the right side of the brain" By Betty Edwards. You don't need to read it all as it's a lot of philosophical mumbo jumbo. However, the exercises inside the book are golden and have helped many artists to start breaking out of this habit. What you want to do when observing a face is to try and accurately draw out what the features look like instead of how you think they look. There are a lot of different things to study within art but taking small chunks out over time will yield amazing results. I can refer you to this journal here: fav.me/d8gixfc which has benefited a lot of people. I hope it helps you as well and if you have any questions on it please feel free to ask me and I'll do my best to help you along yo
