child abuse i guess? not really physical tho. a tldr is that her dad pushed her too hard and broke her horn, she also felt alienated by her whole family so she eventually ran away and adopted a puppy.

horn broke due to her father pushing her way too hard to be a magical prodigy and to have a magic based special talent. was doing a particular difficult spell even for older colts and fillies at a very young age and the spell backfired, the magical explosion breaking her horn. her father saw her as useless and a waste of potential since she failed him. she is quite honestly terrified of him since that incident onward and can't see any good in him.

her relationship with her mother is strained at best. she was mostly absent for most of her life either due to business meetings, conferences, or avoiding her marital problems through drinking. Butterscotch doesn't like her mother for siding with her father a vast majority of the time but doesn't hate her because she was stuck in a one-sided relationship.

she never met her grandparents on her father's side but was babysat as a foal from her grandparents on her mother's side. they constantly belittled and talked poorly about the other races, earth ponies, and pegasi; especially the poor. they were extremely wealthy unicorns who valued their social statuses above all else. they hated her father after breaking her horn because now she was a dud and not a unicorn anymore.

when she was in her mid teens, she ran away from her home and took enough money and food to last about a month. she now lives far away in a smaller town in the countryside. while she was on the run, she found an abandoned pitbull puppy and took him with her. she named him Goober.

she eventually makes friends but has a hard time because of trust issues
