Description From left to right the pieces are 'Spray More', 'Cactus Jump' and 'Chasing Bones'.

These are a few of the ceramic tiles I've been stenciling to then fix up out in public. I came across forty four 6" by 6" (one of my favourite sizes, hah) ceramic tiles for £10, which is bargain.

Once the adhesive has set, these things are absolute twats to get down. I stuck a test one up in my studio-slash-garage and smacked it hard with a hammer a good five or six times: it fractured a fair bit but after that bashing, only a small bit of a corner fell off. Good stuff, eh?

Oh and 'Cactus Jump' isn't meant to make sense, it's an inside joke with friends

Yeah, it can be troublesome to work with because the paint doesn't have anything to sink into; it's a completely smooth surface. However once you get a few coats on, it becomes easier, which is just another reason to go crazy and lay the paint on when I was doing the backgrounds

Thank you.

hahaha yeah. i had a friend who did graffiti on a giant glass window. it was all drippy and stuff. he had to do lots of coats. heheh

the worst ive had to work with is tarpauline. it wasnt that bad. but primed concrete is still the best.

Wood is great, too, soaks in right away and ready for the next layer right away

i dunno. i did a mural on large pieces of plywood one time, and maybe it was just the type of wood, but it was just a little TOO absorbent for me. like spraying on a pourous cinder block. sucked all the paint right up. i needed like 4 coats of primer on the entire frickin thing before any of the spraypaint would even show up. haha

but higher grade boards wouldnt be too bad i guess...

where do you get the wood you work on?

I find it skips and just junk in the street, although I had been referring to spraying on surfaces that are wood in the street and skateboards too

quarkenzyme In reply to ThePpeGFX [2009-09-11 18:01:35 +0000 UTC]

oh yeah, that does make a difference. wood on the street has been primed and weathered most times, and skateboard decks are finished wood. yeah, i did a skateboard once. it was good. i plan on doing more!

awesome paints!
how do u do that driping paint effect? i really like it!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

ThePpeGFX In reply to PhoenixGR [2009-08-26 12:30:11 +0000 UTC]

It's not so much dripping as splatter. You can achieve that look by folding some card into a V shape, spraying paint into the fold and then slashing at the surface you want splatter. Too little paint will result in nothing happening and too much will make it too blotchy. Practice a little on an unimportant space and once you've got the hang of it, go wild

I was wondering about trhat Cactus jump...
But it looks cool, even if it doesnt make sense...
I used some time trying to figure outr what it meant before reding the desciption.

The image comes from a time when I was sat at a computer with friends and I was drawing what they were shouting out. A jumping man quickly became a jumping man holding a cactus, which quickly became a man holding a cactus and shooting himself, which in turn became a man holding a cactus and shooting himself with a big smile on his face. So then months later I was just messing around with designing my stencils and created a version of that character in this style. Haha, no meaning at all

Maybe a paint scraper would work better than a hammer. Or hitting a paint scraper with a hammer. Although, paint can be a bitch to get off sometimes too. Which reminds me of something I'd completely forgotten: I had a bedroom painted bright yellow, not unlike the shade of yellow you use.

ThePpeGFX In reply to PlanetBloopy [2009-08-23 21:49:14 +0000 UTC]

I'll give the 'aint scraper + hammer' technique a go on a test tile. My room is yellow too, it's probably why I use the damn colour so much : D

haha i bought 50 tiles for a fiver at my local pound shop (5 packs) and you have now pushed me into finnaly painting them bitches. you using some of that squeezey wood glue or something else?

they look good btw ;D

ThePpeGFX In reply to todd3utler [2009-08-23 21:42:12 +0000 UTC]

Hah, even cheaper then but at such prices, it's not a crying shame. Yeah, I'm using something called along the lines of 'Unibond Extreme', which binds anything to anything...which is nice. Cheers mate.

oh i see it's like that no more nails stuff. i have spent the last few hours coming up with some designs. if all goes well we'll have to do alittle tile trade.
cheers
