day 2 - roaring 20sSo they were at some crazy 1920s Gatsby-esque party and then decided to leave? idk
I borrowed Deryn's outfit from Zelda Fitzgerald in Midnight in Paris because I can definitely see Deryn saying, "C'mon, let's get out of here. He's bored, I'm bored, we're all bored. We are all. bored." and then apparently taking Alek and Bovril out into the rain to a poorly drawn bridge to tell hilarious stories
Anyway so I really liked the sketch I made for this, and then I started colouring it and I was like "shit I don't have time to make this look good" so I half-assed it and ran it through a bunch of filters in Photoshop and now I have this shoddy piece of work to show for it.
That said I don't know if I'll be able to do the rest of the challenge since I'm super busy this week, and I can't stand posting things that aren't my best work because I die a little inside every time someone says they like it or it's good XD
I'll see what I can do though! But seriously don't lie to me, I know I can do way way way better work than this, especially entirely by hand and omfg I forgot to add more raindrops
ugh who am I kidding, I'm only posting this so I have somewhere to announce my resignation XD IhateitIhateitIhateit

I think this is gorgeous - I thought the sketchy background was a deliberate technique, in order to show off how much 'realer' Alek and Devryn (and Bovril) are in comparison to everything around them.

Great job! I see what you mean about the painting, it doesn't look bad but it is kinda busy. For like the water area and the stone structure whatever you might call it and stuff I would just recommend using less strokes and more of larger areas of watercolor? If that makes any sense. Like using one giant stroke of watercolor as opposed to several little ones. idk if that makes sense the way I explained it.

Well, I would have thought the shotty coloring was on purpose so as to draw attention to Dalek(ril) in the center if you hadn't pointed it out. It's still better than anything I could have done, and the coloring job gives the ides of rain and reflections in puddles and such.
(So I'm glad you can't legit enter because you'd win them all anyway.)

oh brin, your're too sweet, honestly, i can see how you would be disappointed with how the painting turned out, but for the piece as a whole, i think it's really lovely.
When I look at it, my eyes are automatically drawn to deryn's glove. Alek and Deryn are the centre of the drawing and im sure what everyone loves most about it. Even with the rushed watercolour background you've not only managed to create great depth but also convey Alek and Deryn's emotions!! Honestly, I think the piece wouldn't be as strong without the colourful background!~ and im being totally truthful. The blue and yellow give such a magical feel. I would even argue that the background isn't as bad as you seem to think it is, only that the storefronts in the background are a little bit sloppy but the water, looks great! and even the bridge works, you can see the bricks and stuff.
and may i just squee about how cute the actual subject of the drawing is?? eeee kasfjkls its so oo cute!! i lovelove what they're wearing and UGH alek's suit looks so good, he looks sexay in them pants hehe. even their expressions make me want to melt and BOVRIL EEE AWWW his widdle bowtie! <3 so cute i can't even handle it!

I wish I could waterpaint like you! It's my favourite media and I can't do it to save my life T^T - but you did a pretty great job with the lighting - the umbrella, the bridge, I love it! And pffft who needs a lot of raindrops? It was just less rainy that day. I also really like the shading on the heels - it's so 3D-ish, or not flat? I don't actually know what the term is. Round?
And HEY - YOU FINISHED IN TIME! So good job 8D! Hopeeeefully you won't quit now, but if you do - good luck with your busy schedule!

Okay, even if you don't like the coloring, I love the story. Even though I have not read The Great Gatsby, my freshman English teacher (who is awesome) and nerdy fangirl moments about it in class. Hence, anything with it is awesome. (My school is messed up; we don't read it until junior year, for American literature. I should just get off my lazy bum and GO TO THE LIBRARY ALREADY.) And I can totally see Deryn doing that. ^^

Truly one of the worst novels forced upon high-school students. F. Scott and Faulkner and all the Brontes can just go jump off of a poorly-drawn bridge and save the world a lot of agony.
This now concludes my anti-Gatsby rant.
SO. ABOUT YOUR PICTURE. I see where you were rushing and stuff, but parts of this are simply mahvelous, dahling - I love Deryn's leg and her feet and the way the light shines on Alek's suit. Their poses are great too, very natural, although his left arm looks a little weird maybe...?
In short: you should not quit, because even rushed you do some quite good work, my dear, and besides winners never quit and quitters never win! Or something; choose your own moral.

I love this! The background reminds me of a Van Gogh piece, the one he did of the Rhone at night. It actually looks quite a lot like it. And it was done in France! Alek looks very dapper and Deryn very stylish.

I'm seeing all sorts of interesting coloring in the background.. is that a result of filters, or did you actually color it somewhat like that? (e.g. those black strokes near the lamp)

lol I started out with pencil crayons but there was so much area still to cover so I switched to watercolours even though I don't know jackshit about using watercolour XD And THEN I ran it through more watercolour filters to attempt to even it out heh heh
