Not sure why you're getting a rar file when it's supposed to be a 7z file. You'll need 7zip to unpack it.

Just a question:
Why it was necessary to edit the textures for use with XPS?
Can we expand XPS with a necessary feature?

thePWA In reply to XNAaraL [2015-12-22 19:43:27 +0000 UTC]

It isn't an XPS limitation, we just don't know a lot about how Fox Engine uses (i.e. renders) the game assets during gameplay. When extracted the modding tools produce texture files that use channels for a variety of purposes, R might get the ao map, G might get specular for use in night (or day) rendering, B might get a shader map, the alpha for sweat, effects, normal map is the green and alpha channel "gray" kind and so on and so forth. Unless we can figure out how Fox Engine uses these then there is a need to edit the textures so that an approximation of the visuals can be represented in XPS.

I'm not that updated with the latest XPS features other than the Wolf Bane edition for Witcher 3 so please forgive my ignorance if this feature suggestion already exists in XPS. If for an XPS feature, would it be possible for a future release to have XPS display visual/graphic information via RGB channel assignment? A render group maybe that uses channels to display the ao map on the red channel, an alpha map on the blue channel , maybe a spec map on the green channel... this will probably be useful to keep file sizes smaller as there won't be a need for 3 images since one image can do the job already.

Thank you for this information.

True, most of the games use the RGBA values to produce such effects ... such as gloss or weather effects.
Each game in a different way. "The Witcher" has the lightmap, minibump mask and the spec map as RGB in the _ao.map; "Skyrim" has the gloss map in the alpha channel of the normal map ... "Tomb Raider TRU" has an extra texture with mini maps mask and wet effect ... etc

Thanks for the suggestion that XPS should define visual/graphic information assignment via RGB channel. Currently I have no idea what is the best way to define/store the information in the mesh. Maybe as flags. Perhaps as additional map for every render group. Perhaps as new render group ... But I'll think about it. I like your suggestion

I was wondering as well. I haven't check any of this TPP models, but maybe he could mean to the bump maps (black & white textures)?

BTW, any news about the NGFF? Sorry to ask this again, but since you dropped the idea I've found it would very helpful and useful

Bump maps as black & white textures ... is in my wording a Heightmap  ... and this is also a good idea.

I do not want to spam the deviation by thePWA  ... but right, with NGFF  this texture issue  would be possible. I have never dropped the idea

BTW: The "XPS 11.3 Material Editor" was a result from your NGFF journal here comments.deviantart.com/1/5326…

I think you are right and wrong.

From what I've been reading, bump map is a type of height map. The same as normal and displacement maps. There are all height maps, but each of them work differently:
- Bump maps: grey-scales images that simulates a surface without affecting the actual geometry of the model.
- Displacement maps: grey-scales images, such as the bump maps, but this ones do affect the geometry of the model while rendering.
- Normal maps: simulates a geometry without changing the original one. There are actually maps (stored in the RGB channels as you already know) simulating the direction of where the normals are facing.

Better explained here:
blog.digitaltutors.com/underst…

So basically there are all height maps, because they all refer in some way to surface elevation data, as mentioned in the link you pasted wiki.openttd.org/Heightmap

Really? Well, I'm happy to be helpful

Now yes, I don't want to spam either. We can continue somewhere else if you want. You can answer me in either my profile or in any of my comments in the suggestion thread from xnalaraitalia xnalaraitalia.deviantart.com/j…
