Description I work at a call center, so occasionally there is time between calls to do some drawing. Abstract drawings are perfect for this since you can easily start and stop.

A rule I've set for myself when drawing this picture was to abandon any rigid thought process that would hold me to a planned out composition. Only drew what I felt like at the moment. The only bit of planning was to fill the entire page, but when I came to about three fourths of the way down the page I saw that leaving the bottom clear was the way to go. I love negative space, what you don't draw is as important as what you do.

These shapes evoke machinery or a big bustling city like New York. The gobs of black that actually reach the bottom of the page remind me of oil spilling down, maybe all of its oil spreading out across the pristine waters of the paper. Or it could be trash being dumped from the back of a garbage truck.

After browsing your gallery I have to say that I like the most your black and white abstract works. Like the one above. It's very well planned out - there just a few small things that bother me: in the right upper corner there is a rectangle with dots, it almost reaches the edge of the paper, that milimeter of white space between them is unnecessary. The other thing are the two large circels in the upper part, one darker one lighter - drawn with a line. Despite the fact that they differ they are simillar in shape and size and the fact that they are close together irritates. Maybe if they were in different parts of the picture, or if one of them was cropped, than they would not bother that much. Everything else is just fine, good that you used both black and white lines, and black and white spaces. It contrasts the picture, making it much more interesting. The best part of it is that you left the bottom almost all white, that way the viewer can relax and take it full all the contrast.

Thanks for the thoughtful critique. You take a chance critiquing abstract work, but I appreciate it and will take heed of your observations. You have me noticing things that had flown right past my attention (such as the similarity of the two large circles up top).

I love drawings like this - where you just doodle absent-mindedly, without paying attention to composition or anything. It makes for a much more free, creative and exciting drawing - which is exactly what this is. I cannot see any repeated elements/shapes in this, which is great. When I doodle like this, sometimes I concentrate too much, and it starts to look boring D:
Anyway, soz, I rambled a bit there. I think this is awesome.

You're not rambling. In fact I understand exactly where you are coming from. I too like spontaneous artwork. A lot of my best pieces found their beginning in a sketch I made spur of the moment.

seems like a glimpse into the ordered chaos of the subconscious.

Thanks Fascinating insight. I feel that spontaneous art like this does tap into unconscious feelings and ideas.

nice. your decision to stop at the bottom was perfect. It just wouldn't have the same effect if you would have filled the entire page
