That she had only her Grandfather to turn to, and that when he died she wanted him to be turned into a memory gem (the Aquamarine she wears around her neck.) Yes, it seems far too depressing for the actual show, but that's how I view her past.

My maternal grandpa who was like a dad to me died on September 2010. My actual dad died on April 15, 1997 when I was 10. I never meet my other grandfather from my dad's side because he died 16 years before I was born. I currently don't have any grandparents now because my last surviving grandparent was my maternal grandma who died on September 2014.
