Description For you to get this, I have to explain in as much detail as possible, so please read the following before really looking at the images.

Step 1 in this assignment was to find a naturally occuring object (basically something from nature). I chose a leaf due to its inconspicuous details and interesting linear structures.

Step 2 was to create a linear grid system based upon the object. I simplified the leaf down to its most basic structure and manipulated the placement on the page to determine the best possible way to communicate that this was, in fact, a leaf.

Step 3 was to take this linear grid system and imply it's structure using type and WITHOUT lines. The type, through variations in weight, leading, and tracking, had to define the lines as well as their hierarchy. Notice that theres a bigger difference where that large center line is than in the rest of the composition.

Step 4 was to take this linear grid system and imply the lines through use of photographs of the original object. I scanned the leaf in at 1200 dpi to get some fine details, and altered the color in order to promote the idea that leaves are part of trees, which produce fruit (its a fruity color).

Step 5 was to take this photographic layout and add type, as if this were an actual poster promoting the object in some manner. We had to introduce a headline, subheads, and some body copy. I used Palatino because its a very natural typeface with interesting counters and serifs.

---------

I've layed these steps out in a step-by-step process so you can follow along and appreciate the 8 weeks of work I've put into this. Frankly, after 8 weeks of looking at it I've almost become soured to the whole thing.

Wow, I've heard people talk about the grid system before, but I could never figure out quite was was being referred to. These images, along with your explanation are excellent. Your ability to come up with the end pruduct that you did, starting from only the picture of a leaf amazes me. Mind you, after 8 weeks of work I'm not surprised this looks great. Really pisses me off that I haven't looked through your gallery more closely in the past.

Excellent work.

It's deviations like this that make me glad I read the description first. It really helps you in the understanding of the process that you've went through.
Its a really interesting way of creating a poster, certainly not a way that I would have thought about doing one, but it certainly helps you get some good results.

do you have a link to any other assignments you do? I'd be interested in seeing some more ideas on how to reach such awesome results, mostly in design concepts though, I don't expect any PS walk throughs, I just love learning concepts.

I really like all of it. The composition and color choices...the way you used the type in the defining lines with offset type panel....it's all wonderful.
Except for the paragraph of small orange font in the last panel. It's such a sore thumb...I think it could have been placed better...the eye get's stuck there, and that's a bad thing.

Step 3 seems like it woulda been best with only the LIGHTEST of font weight with major spacing and leading in the upper left most section, to make it look more like an unimportant background area.. That seems like it woulda defined an object moreso.. I think the Step 3 requirements though are kinda different... your chinese food box was awesome though, using mainly text to make an object.. I think you have to combine some techniques to make 'only text' effective and good looking. Step 3 by itself is kinda bland and difficult to the eyes.

The rest is freaking awesome though. I love the last two Steps.. the sections you chose to color are like leaves themselves, bent like a bowl in a profile view.. so it's like.. leaf within a leaf.. the text is awesome, and the text on the leaf lines just adds some powerful emphasis on the text.. the texture itself with the color does an awesome job of what you were going for... it's pretty damn good, I likes it.

Well, the essence of Step 3 is not really to create an attractive piece, but to explore the shades of gray created by text. Most people in the class have a difficult-to-look-at composition for that step. The ones that don't didn't follow the assignment well.

Yeah thats a typo I noticed after I uploaded it, but the way the updating system works around here would cause everyone whose already seen it to get the thing in their message box again.

Oh well, I guess I'll change it.

Must say this is a spectacular piece, never thought anything was made like this, but the steps from leaf to design are amazing, and you can really see the hours of work put into this.

Also I think the selection of the leaf as material is a great selection, and the words put around in the final product are perfectly selected

A very unique piece.

I like the linework in step 2 quite a bit, and the final step is very well done. The title and type used are excellent choices and fit the work perfectly. Did you write that yourself?

Great job.

nice use of lorem ipsum hehe. anyway, i think to get the full effect of this image seeing it on the comp, its best to save it and look at the entire thing on the screen so u can easily see how each panel relates, then look at the huge one to see all of the detail. very creative work.

Very cool! I think this project was one of those where you just have to trust the process and in the end it looks great. The final layout has a very nice balance and simplicity which really renders the design and shapes of nature itself. I must also say your choice of that orangy red is perfect. I probably would have gone with green without thinking, but the way you did it gives the composition an almost abstracted feeling, yet the various clues such as the texture and forms always lead you back to the idea that this is a leaf. Finally I find the typography works flawlessly and your choice of font is particularly fitting, in a way that you don't even have to think about it because it integrates so easily with the organic tone of the piece.
