Ahuizotl was the 8th ruler or Huey Tlatoani of the Aztec empire, reigning from 1486 to 1502. Despite being the middle child, he was the last of his three brothers (Axayacatl and Tizoc) to take the throne, at the approximate age of 36 years old. Before his coronation, Ahuizotl served as the High General or "Tlacochcalcatl" (meaning “Lord of the House of Darts”) for at least 19 years, acquiring a great deal of military experience.

His rule would be one of great prosperity and military success, doubling the empires size with large scale military campaigns that extended as far as the Soconusco, and heading several large construction projects within Mexico-Tenochtitlan. Unfortunately, his reign was cut short by an accident during the construction of an aqueduct from Coyoacan to the imperial capital in 1502, being succeeded by Motecuhzoma II. His legacy would continue among his sons, the rulers Chimalpilli II of Ecatepec and the now legendary Cuauhtémoc, the descending eagle.

He is illustrated here wearing the outfit typical of his military rank, a war suit styled on a monstrous deity called the Tzitzimitl (pl. Tzitzimimeh). Missing (located behind the helmet) is the representation of a sacrificial slit on the chest with an extruding liver, as well as the war standard typical of the office. On his shoulder he wears a cloak with the “Yecacozcayo” (meaning Jewels of Ehecatl) glyph pattern, a series of cross sectioned conch shells interspersed with double lines likely meaning to represent a necklace. The conch shells, along with the white and red “eyes” along the edge of the border are associated with both the gods Ehecatl and Tezcatlipoca.

The murals behind him were inspired by archaeological remains at Tenochtitlan, Ocotelulco and Teotihuacan, as well as illustrations of the codex Borgia.

I love the gravitas of this portrait. You really get the sense he is in a moment of anticipation before the solemn event of his coronation. There is a great weight to the figure and the fabrics. The amazing attention to detail and lighting really enhance the effect and make your art bring history to life. Looking at your art makes me really want to see a period drama set in historically accurate Mesoamerica!
