from my vague knowledge of the galaxy far, far away, I'm guessing the original Mandalore worked with Exar Kun back in the Sith Wars.
but I'm still trying to figure out how the Fetts actually became part of that culture.

am I making any sense at all?

Jango's family was killed when a battle was going on between the Mandalorians and a rival group of mercenaries. The leader of the Mandalorians at that time, Jaster Mereel, found the young Jango and took him in and raised him to be a Mandalorian.
