There's nothing quite as scary as a child screaming. My gosh.

Aww, why does she get all the awesome powers?! D:

By the way, how big are your pages? (Both the original size, and the shrink-to-fit-the-internet size) I can't figure out a good size. :S

TheSilverTopHat In reply to 1o11y9o9 [2012-04-28 02:24:01 +0000 UTC]

Original size of the pages is 8.5 by 11. I shrink them down to about 2.75 wide (and however tall that is while keeping it the same dimensions) but that's just a number I find looks good on the internet and is easy for loading onto websites. I draw them 8.5 by 11 more as a traditional thing, since the first hand drawn pages were drawn on basic printing paper which is the same size. It's not all that convenient, some printers that specialize in comics don't print that particular dimension. The DPI on my pages is 300. Now a days I keep both the shrunk version and the original copy on seperate files, but at the beginning I just shrunk the files for easy management and now I have ALL THE REGRETS!

Cheers! Is that in inches, or...? And what's DPI?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

TheSilverTopHat In reply to 1o11y9o9 [2012-04-30 06:48:45 +0000 UTC]

Inches, yes. DPI stands for Dots Per Inch, and basically refers to how many pixels are in an inch of the picture. More pixels means smaller pixels which means a smoother, cleaner look, but it also means more file space taken up. 300 is a pretty good quality for what I'm doing.

Woah! Are you sure 300 is right? I just tried it on a page, and according to photoshop, it's 16 times as big. Maybe the page I had was dodgy.

*Double checks* Well, my Resolution is at 300 Pixels/inch. I'm pretty sure that's the same thing as Dots per inch (but I'd be the first to blame myself if there was a mistake in communications somewhere). I DO work with really big files.

Ok, I double checked. That IS the right size, my resolution was just really stuffed up. Thank you so much!

(Well... Okay, I didn't know... But it would be pretty weak sauce if all the other heirs could shoot lazer beams and turn invincible and turn birds into swords and see the future and all that cool jazz and Clair could just kind of zap around.)

Also, I like how some of the golems have latched onto Blitz's wing there. And the wings aren't looking flat now. How'd you fix that? Any tips for the wings?

AngelWarriorQueen In reply to Aura-Chimera [2012-04-27 15:04:03 +0000 UTC]

Yeah that's got to be uncomfortable. I'd imagine it's like someone grabbing you from your ears or nose.

TheSilverTopHat In reply to Aura-Chimera [2012-04-27 15:01:30 +0000 UTC]

I'm not sure if I 'fixed' anything, maybe it's just the angle they're at (the first time we see Blitz's dragon form his wings are flared out so they look kind of flat from the front). As for tips, it kind of helps to think of webbed wings like hands with fingers with webbing between them. Also watching a lot of movies/looking at pictures of birds in flight. I can sort of close my eyes and imaging how Blitz wings look as he flaps them.

I am so happy to hear that it helped you with your exam! That makes it all worth it.

I got it from a Talk I read last semester about Enduring. [link] There is the full article, and it has the other verse that I couldn't fit into my signature. I hope you enjoy it, and congrats on nearing the finish line for your semester!

TheSilverTopHat In reply to djpimpslap22 [2012-04-27 07:35:28 +0000 UTC]

Well, I'm already making a comic of my own, but I'm always happen to answer questions or offer advice.

djpimpslap22 In reply to TheSilverTopHat [2012-04-27 07:39:22 +0000 UTC]

TheSilverTopHat In reply to djpimpslap22 [2012-04-27 14:59:12 +0000 UTC]

Well I guess that depends on what you mean by helping you make a comic. I'm not available to write or draw anything that's not Archipelago or a commission. If you have any questions, like I said, I'm free to answer. For advice I'd suggest basic things like make sure you have a high quality and size for your original pages, and draw your comics large with a high pixel count (300 is good) if you're working in a digital medium. Even if you have to shrink your pages down to upload them to the internet, keep a seperate file for the original large image, it'll make it so much easier one day if you want to publish what you've done to have really high quality images (that's a mistake I made in the earlier books of Archipelago). Just starting a comic will do more to improve your comic skills then anything else, though art lessons are very helpful (I especially recommend figure drawing, that was my most useful class EVER). Basic stuff like that.

Then keep on looking for an artist! There are plenty out there who have trouble writing stories of their own. Just because I'm not the right artist for the job doesn't mean they're not out there. I remember at one of the conventions I went to they had a seminar where artists without writers and writers without artists could meet up and exchange e-mails and such. And until you meet them, don't feel as if your own projects must go on hold. If you have stories to tell, like the velociraptors in Jurassic Park, they'll find a way out through one medium or another.

I think what she said was that she will not make a comic with you, because of her own project. But she will be happy to answer specific questions or give you advice on what to do to make your own comic.
