Description My bi? weekly entry for the contest.
It's MY suggestion, dammit!
Really hoped to have more time to do this, but the deadline is one week shorter, apparently.

Characters are all mine, and if you're wondering why they don't look conventional, it's because there's a reason why all of them look as they do, related to backstory and such. Ask away.
Characters from left to right:
Crystal: Reporter by day, female werewolf at... Hardly ever. She's really not impressed at the changes, but there wasn't many other options at that time...
Kendrick: More of a mage than a werewolf, if his 'know it all' attitude is any indication. A useful font of knowledge when Google isn't around, and a general douchebag otherwise.
Vorsar (big one): Comes from a time when all the pack needed was a big, bad, strong, and uh... active leader. Hates modern stuff with a passion. Especially the kind that shoots bullets.
Jake: Was born floofy, which pretty much killed any big or bad aspirations. Joined the military, but prefers to stick with the apothecary units. Is pretty handy with big guns when not cowering.
Grey (standing): Was half-dead when discovered as a pup, and his mental and physical state have never quite been normal. He claims to see dead people, and farm animals, and birds... Has an annoying tendency to relay the messages of late in-laws.
Brasken (lounging): Termed 'Barking Mad' for his collateral damage record. In truth, he's probably a little too good with his blood magic and really bad with aiming. His pack won't have him, but the Mob doesn't mind.
"Sir Demarrick" (pondering): Was an honourable, chivalric knight at one inconvenient time for a not so righteous order. His subsequent betrayal and fall from grace sees him being simultaneously fascinated with his curse while being repulsed by its bloody potential.
Hunter: As low and dirty as you can get. Doesn't bathe. Doesn't regret. And enjoys a life on the edge. He's still alive, so far...

DO NOT STEAL.

Again, I didn't have much time to do this so it's sketchy.

*holy crap, I could actually see the difference between Brasken and Hunter* I'm not sure if that means I'm just observant, or if I'm too much of a fan of your work, but this is still one of my higher favorites of yours. XD

Thanks!

It's not THAT hard to see the differences between them, surely? Besides the colouration difference, one of them is also clearly more physically built? ^^

I mean, I could tell more from their responses, and the way they were sitting, ALONG with their appearance. XD It was an awareness that caught me off guard.
You're welcome.

Mine too! (They are also two of my earliest character concepts on DA)
I know I've a lot of werewolf characters, but so far the two of them are the only ones for whom I can't find an 'archetype' in TV tropes or such.
It's also kinda funny how one of them is really complex and the other is just so simple.

psshhhh...it's not the amount of characters that you have, it's the amount of effort you put in to them!
Solidify all of them and work them to your means and you'll have a wonderful story to tell I'm sure of it!

I love how complex Grey is, he left me thinking about his motives and background.

Well... You know how nowadays no character is 'truly original'?
I have yet to find a duplicate personality of Hunter or Grey (so yay! for now) Anyway, I've spent enough time on memes as it is :-P [link] There's also plenty of backstory on each of them if you have the stomach for walls of text that would put China's marvel to shame

Actually, Grey is the simple one He's the happy mental case living in his own little world of spirits while the world goes on. Hunter is the one that's hard to predict.

Originality is extremely over rated, in my opinion. Too much focus is put on it and not enough focus is put on to how useful your creations are to get the means understood by the audience.
I once heard a quote by another artist (I honestly can't remember the name..or gender by that means) that stated "Fictional characters are tools to be used towards the creator's ends." I honestly couldn't agree more with the statement.
I'll make my way through as much of the memes as I can handle, but I'll probably focus on the written bits since that's where the juice is!

TheTinkerThinker In reply to Freakaru [2011-02-05 07:52:46 +0000 UTC]

I haven't heard that one yet, although I wouldn't doubt it may be so for some. At the moment I'm finding 'beauty' to be the most overrated issue on DA (you know, breathtaking flawless detail on every single inch of skin/blade of grass), which I blame on advertising media--hurts my heartstrings really to see artists pouring blood, soul (and about 72 straight hours)into producing 'realistic' beauty only to feel depressed when it falls short of their expectations.
I guess that's why I decided to fall back onto a more comicky style to get the message across

If you prefer written bits, then there's an (incomplete) story about Hunter that I'd originally started for NaNoWriMo here: [link] and hope to continue on eventually.
It's something I'm rather proud of, actually. ^^

Thanks again so much for your time.

Nice collection! So which ones are "good" in an alignment sense?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

TheTinkerThinker In reply to StarGamerWorld [2010-12-18 22:38:07 +0000 UTC]

Thanks for the comment!
Hmmm... I don't really use 'good' and 'bad' to describe my characters anymore. But I'll say that the three in the backrow are mostly likely to put the hurt on with the least provocation, whereas the leftmost two in the front row aren't easily angered. The third one and fourth one after them are likely to evade hostility, while the rightmost one on the front row probably will get back at you when you're least expecting it.
Makes sense?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

StarGamerWorld In reply to TheTinkerThinker [2010-12-18 22:45:52 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, but what I was asking was which ones are of good alignment, like they would protect humans and their friends than say... slaughter them.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

TheTinkerThinker In reply to StarGamerWorld [2010-12-18 23:24:58 +0000 UTC]

Ah, here's the way werewolves work for me--they don't go 180 alignment shifts just because they get fuzzy. Rather, shifting brings out the more hidden mentalities of their human selves. All of them would at least attempt to protect or warn those that they considered friends (human or not). Only Jake (the cowering one) feels any particular sort of empathy with humans, and Crystal (the female) would not actively try to hurt anyone. Otherwise they are generally quite indifferent to strangers, and barring "Sir" Demarrick (whose religious ideals are haywire), they would not attack anyone unprovoked.

Attack the other five, however, and they WILL return fire, possibly lethally.
Think of werewolves as being devoted to their friends, while others simply don't matter to them.

StarGamerWorld In reply to TheTinkerThinker [2010-12-18 23:39:57 +0000 UTC]

Ah, okay. I suppose I should have asked which ones are nicer than the others lol

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

TheTinkerThinker In reply to StarGamerWorld [2010-12-19 04:18:51 +0000 UTC]

Well, the ones that are genuinely nice are Crystal and Jake. Hunter is nice in a laid-back sort of way, but mainly to the ladies (and he can get nasty really quickly so I wouldn't count him in). Kendrick has a very icy professional demeanour, so not really. If Sir Demarrick is 'nice' it is more due to a sense of obeying set personal doctrines than being genuine. Vorsar and Brasken come off immediately as being very aggressive (and somewhat unfriendly) to strangers, but if you manage to get them to like you, they can be very nice in a comrade-y way as opposed to being 'friends' sort of friends. Lastly, Grey seems somewhat friendly but never quite 'there', but he's nice enough if weird.

Well, I just wanted a group shot. If it was done for real, there would be a gap of like 20 seats between him and the rest (He doesn't mind tho, seeing he's not on the best terms with others of his kind)

Yeah, he's not exactly a natural werewolf, but he's not complaining about the benefits.
Well, two of the others in the picture would try to kill him on sight, normally, and all but one of the rest would draw a big red line on the ground and tell him to stay away.

Thanks! The last thing I wanted was to have a cookie cutter model for all of them, although in hindsight, only one of them is a particularly 'true' werewolf in personality.
From left to right, they would be more appropriate as a were-
Bear Hyena --
Fox, Cat, Dog, Jackal Rat

Oh well, at least there's diversity, but you get the idea.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

TheTinkerThinker In reply to GabbyVee [2010-10-27 09:45:58 +0000 UTC]

Indeed! I wonder if I should make them separate were creatures like fitting their personality, but that would kill the diversity factor, I suppose, since everyone would then know what to expect from them. Thanks again!

GabbyVee In reply to TheTinkerThinker [2010-10-28 07:46:19 +0000 UTC]

That would be true, but still an interesting concept! I like it, kinda makes me think of a persons spiritual totem...but maybe more violent haha

TheTinkerThinker In reply to GabbyVee [2010-10-28 09:16:59 +0000 UTC]

Spiritual totem would be about right, although I'd have to make it less native sounding (native werewolves with those feathers and beads are just a no go to me--I keep imagining they also have tomahawks and do that high pitched yodelling with hands over their mouths )

GabbyVee In reply to TheTinkerThinker [2010-10-29 18:55:07 +0000 UTC]

haha yeah they're a completely different thing altogether, in native lore skin walkers. Which are cool! But not were-beasts. hah I'm a huge nerd!

TheTinkerThinker In reply to GabbyVee [2010-10-29 19:17:07 +0000 UTC]

Skin Walkers and Were-beasts. What's the difference?
Does the former merely 'put on animal skins' to initiate the change?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

GabbyVee In reply to TheTinkerThinker [2010-11-02 03:55:53 +0000 UTC]

Pretty much yeah! It's a Navajo belief were people get skins from witches and the like that turn them into whatever animal they want, depending on the skin of course! They're really other worldly and have the ability to steal other peoples skin, kind of like possession. x] I'm a huge dork for that kind of stuff!

TheTinkerThinker In reply to GabbyVee [2010-11-02 05:20:23 +0000 UTC]

Hmmm...
I'm more familiar with the sinister versions of those stories: there's Chinese tales of demons or less savory things that literally skin people, and wear those skins as one would wear clothes.
Painted Skin, the story was called, if I were to translate it roughly--gave me the creeps when I was younger.

Well, I have so many OCs so a group pic was only a matter of time

Well, I didn't mind the movie, really. To tell the truth all my werewolves are based on human as opposed to wolf anatomy, so they're not that different in anatomy at all from the Wolfman, although they have a wolf head instead.
