I always look at contemporary mechanical stuff, and I try to find the elements that are the most repeated like airshafts, fins, cables, hydraulic systems...
I then try to assemble them nicely.....

Indeed it looks very much like Feng Zhu's or Joe Johnston's art. I like that style of concept-arts. And this one is very well done.
