A contemporary portrait with a very strong visual impact. It engages the viewer immediately with the striking use of blue on porcelain skin. The eyes are drawn to the mouth rather than traditionally the eyes, evoking a more primal feel with the image. Limiting the use makeup allows a more natural appeal balanced and juxtaposed to the blue hair. The black and white and brilliant blue is calmed buy the softer lighting.
The framing and use of the ribbon creates almost a narrative telling us there is more to it that what we can see, this gives the audience a greater experience than an image alone. What this story may be is left to the viewer’s imagination and own experiences. The only clues we may have is in the title of the work which really only provides more questions than answers, except to confirm that what we are seeing is part of something bigger. The narrative is an important part of this art work to separate it from the suggestion that it would merely be a portrait – no, there is an idea in this work not just a picture for decoration or vanity or erotica.
The technical skills employed here are at a high level, as seen in the lighting that allow the colour to work so well, and in how TheUnknownAssassin has framed the work bringing balance directing viewer focus. The depth of field used on the camera could possibly be slightly increased, but this would only be slight.
Overall, The Laughing Man is an image that is as easy on the eye as it is eye catching. It grabs our attention, it is so easy to look at and then we find ourselves engaged and bringing our own thoughts into someone else’s art – a feat all artists should aspire to.
