Description
Crystalloptera atlas, the atlas whale, is the most well-known member of the genus Crystalloptera (crystal wings). Crystalloptera is the only genus in the family Crystallopteridae, currently classified in the suborder of baleen whales, Mysticeti.

Atlas whales are commonly seen in the western skies of Gaelica and Titania. Little is known about their physiology, evolutionary history, or life cycle. They have never been observed feeding, and there is much speculation about what food source could exist in enough abundance to support a population of such massive creatures. Currently, the popular assumption is that they feed below the clouds, though they have never been witnessed breaching the cloud barrier.

Despite their immense size, it is unknown how their bones do not implode under the weight of their own bodies. Some theories claim that their skeleton is composed of the same crystal lining their fins and backs. Only one sample of this crystal has ever been obtained. It is found to be sturdier than any known material, yet surprisingly lightweight. Its chemical composition has not been identified.
Other suggestions include the presence of supernatural abilities granted by the Angel. Until all other possibilities have been disproven, this theory cannot be confirmed.

Atlas whales are not aggressive and do not seem to be perturbed even when landed upon. However, there is one recorded incident in which an atlas whale attacked and killed a person flying an aero next to them. The cause for aggression is unknown.
