In terms of critique, it helps to included the T-nail of the pencils when it's in the penciler's gallery.

How does one accomplish that?

It's easy. 1) Open the deviation page (the page that has the pencils). 2) Hover your cursor over the dialogue field that's labeled "Thumb" (located on the lower right side of the screen - you may have to scroll down a little bit. You'll see stats, submission date, page link and other meta data in that area). Right click and select "Copy". 3) Then paste that Thumb code in your artist's comments. Ta-dah!

I attempted it, but it doesn't actually post the thumb, just the code. What am I missing?

There are three dialogue boxes in that area of the screen 1) link, 2) Thumb and 3) Embed. I think you just copied the wrong one. Hover over "thumb" , select it (so it turns to white letters on blue background). Then right click and copy. Then open artist's comments in EDIT mode. Then paste the thumb.
These are the steps I took here. Do the same and it will look just like this.
