Description
The collapse of the United States after the Cuban Missile Crisis escalated into conflict and the Soviet invasion of Western Europe are two events that would be remembered forever by the people of the world. The thing that a lot of people tend to forget, is that alongside the USA, another country collapsed in North America: Canada. Although Canada had remained neutral during the Last War, the effects of the nuclear radiation that had engulfed the United States caused trouble in Canada as well.
As the nuclear clouds gathered over the Prairie Provinces, the country started to crumble. Soon, the province of Quebec became the center of an insurgency orchestrated by the communist Quebec Liberation Front that ended with the province declaring its independence, forming a Marxist-Leninist state. The Canadian Armed Forces were unable to crush the revolution, mostly due to the lack of competence and organization of the Canadian government. Soon after the fall of Quebec, the rest of the country started disintegrating.Seeing this national catastrophe, a secret group of Canadian Army officers, under the command of Lieutenant-General Geoffrey Walsh, Chief of the General Staff, decided to overthrow the Canadian government and take matters into their own hands. This plan, codenamed Operation Sunshine was to be carried out immediately by units of the Canadian Army that were loyal to Walsh and his associates. On December 6th 1962, the operation was put into action.
Several Canadian Army units encircled the city of Ottawa, cutting off electricity and blocking possible evacuation routes. Then, around nine of these units moved towards the city center, with the goal of occupying the Houses of Parliament and 24 Sussex Drive, the official residence of the prime minister. Unfortunately for them, they were stopped by loyal Army units as well as armed citizens that had blockaded roads inside the city. Fighting broke out, and several people were killed, including a large part of the rebellious units. The rest tried to flee the city, as their putsch attempt had failed.
Seeing the failure of their coup d’état, Walsh, his co-conspirators and a lot of the units loyal to him, fled to neighboring Saskatchewan. The province was weakened by the effects of nuclear radiation, as even its capital, Regina, had been harshly affected by the nuclear holocaust. Walsh managed to take over the province quite easily, as the provincial government was mostly non-existent, and the remaining local politicians were forced to give power to the military.
After that, Lieutenant-General Walsh was declared “Military Administrator of Saskatchewan” and imposed martial law throughout the province. He also closed its borders and created a quarantine zone around the region affected by the nuclear disaster. Walsh’s men arrested and imprisoned any citizen that went against his rule, and also confiscated private property in order to be used by his regime. During all of that, the neighboring provinces of Alberta and British Columbia collapsed due to the lack of a central government. Walsh sensed a great opportunity in that, and ordered an invasion of the Canadian West. After a month, both Alberta and British Columbia were put under Walsh’s regime, now calling itself the Military Administration of the Prairie Provinces and British Columbia (commonly referred as the Military Administration of Western Canada). The capital was moved to Vancouver, one of the few big cities in the area not affected by radiation. Walsh ruled the region as a dictator, imposing his will through violence and restricting freedom of movement and speech. The MAWC declared that they are the legitimate successor of the Canadian government and denounced the CPG as an “American satellite” and a “Chicago lapdog”.
In 1967, Western Canada found itself in conflict with the neighboring Pacific People’s Federation, over the ownership of Vancouver Island, which the PPF claimed as part of their territory. The Vancouver War lasted for just three months. Due to Soviet support, the PPF was able to occupy Vancouver island and they almost captured the city of Vancouver itself. The Military Administration surrendered to the PPF. After the war, Vancouver island became a part of the Federation. This humiliating defeat socked Western Canada.
After the war ended, the popularity of Lieutenant-General Walsh had taken a downfall. Riots broke out in Vancouver City against his administration. Eventually, Walsh was ousted after an internal coup, that put Lieutenant-General Samuel F. Clark in its place. Clark restored order in the region in just a week, using the military to crush the rioters. After that, he announced the lift of some restrictions, including freedom of information and movement, and also stopped the practice of land confiscation by the state. Still, the regime retained a harsh nationalist and anti-leftist rhetoric, arresting left-wing sympathizers and pro-Soviet citizens and jailing them without a trial.
People in Western Canada lived a life of constant shortages in all goods, as the regime controlled most food supplies, medication and other products. Connections inside the regime were often necessary If you wanted to obtain something, although a considerably large black market had been created that supplied communities with illegal goods. Military police patrolled the streets, arresting anyone that they believed was breaking the law, even If that wasn’t clear.
The Military Administration of Western Canada wasn’t the most compassionate of the nations of North America. Their population was small, and their military capabilities questionable. Even so, the regime did anything they could to keep order and stability intact, with the hopes that one, day they would be the ones to reunite Canada under their rule...
