Description I ADORE Lilo and Stitch and my favorite character is Lilo, but there were two things about her design that I didn't like. First being that she had a potato nose. I feel they really exaggerated the Polynesian noses in this film by making them look massive like potatoes. So I gave her Moana's nose. The other thing is the fact that she didn't have any lips. That is something that always annoys me about animation. I hate when they don't give female characters lips, which is why I get annoyed with the art style of anime a lot of the time. I mean, they don't have to be wearing lipstick but make it look like they have actual lips. I don't care if they are little girls, they need to have lips. You can make their lips skin tone colored but give them lips. I think she looks much better this way. I hope you guys like it and comment letting me know what you think. Enjoy.

But I thought “Moana” is an 2-D like animated film?
Was this concept art an app?

Nice edit here. 👩🏻‍💼

Though as for me....about the lips-thing....I think Lilo looks way cuter the way she normally & actually is in the movies and tv-series. It might come of as an “agree/disagree”-thing...but I’m not really much into the idea that every young cartoon/anime girl should have lips because their female.

Again, I love Lilo’s original design much better than this edited version. But that’s just my own opinion.

Maybe it’s just me...but (not saying this meanly though)...I don’t necessarily see the point of why every cartoon ladies of any/every age-group should have lips because....again, female gender. Maybe you don’t care if they’re just little girls...but for me, personally (again, just stating my own opinion) I do care. If the actual animators of any animation media..decides not to give certain young female characters lips, whether it be Disney, Don Bluth, or any animation company...then that’s their decision..not ours, not yours, not mine...no one.

And another thing I have to respectfully disagree about when it comes to young female characters (again...respectfully) : They DON’T need to have lips because they’re female. Otherwise that would only raise the animation design stereotype that all female characters should have lips because they’re female. Hence why most anime shows and anime movies (particularly Ghibli-films) go with a simpler, yet still cute and beautiful design for their female characters.

I can easily understand more when they give lips to animated characters who are adult women and mother-type of characters, because they are in a certain age that feels more suitable to have lips. But when it’s done on female characters that are CHILDREN or even teenagers...It just doesn’t seem that natural but rather obligatory.

For me...I think young cartoon girls are cuter WITHOUT the lips, because not only is it simpler but also more creative with how the characters express themselves with their mouths open. That’s what animation is for.

Again... I have female Disney OC characters that are young children/preteens and they don’t need lips. You know why? Because A: I like them much better without lips on their mouths and B: I don’t judge badly characters on their designs, let alone facial designs.

So that’s what I think personally. And personally...I don’t think female cartoon kids need lips whatsoever, since I don’t judge characters by their animation designs. Good, bad, ugly, beautiful, etc...I don’t judge them for that, regardless.

Hence why I think in general...no young cartoon girls need or should have lips just to prove that female stereotype. I just see them as charmingly cute & pretty either way. Nerdy, beautiful...whatever.

I must respectfully disagree with you. I feel that just drawing a line for a mouth is LAZY and it makes female characters look less feminine. No offense, but I don't care if it's the artist's vision because that doesn't exempt it from criticism just because that was their vision. If it is out there for the public to see, it is subject to criticism no matter what. And I feel like they have a better expression when they have real lips. It allows for more of a fun facial expression, rather than just a dumb line for a mouth. Also a stereotype? That's not an actual stereotype, especially since everyone has lips. We don't just have a line for a mouth. We have actual lips! The only reason male characters don't have them is that they almost always look weird with them. I think female characters of ALL ages should have lips but they don't have to be colored. They can be slightly darker or slightly pinker than their skin color. Child and preteen characters are still at an age where if they were female and had something like a pixie cut they would look like a boy (Same with a boy character at that age with really long hair). Their faces aren't developed enough to pull it off. Same thing with lips. Sorry, but that's just part of life and it's a convention of animation. And again, I just consider not giving female characters actual lips is just LAZY. Just my opinion. No offense. And sorry for taking so long to respond. I've been busy and lacking energy lately.

To each their own.

But...here’s why I also have to respectfully disagree here. And here’s why. Don’t feel offended if my points target what you’re trying to say.

1. Drawing a line for a mouth (even when not simplistic) is not laziness at all, like you assume it to be. Also...no, I don’t think it would make female characters less feminine without them.

2. You don’t care, but am I/are we expected to not care as well? Every artist has their own vision and we should respect that no matter what. You may think it’s subject to criticism, but not many others would see it that way so easily (including me).

3. Ehh....they don’t. Not for me, no. For me, the simplistic lines on the mouths, feels way more appealing to me. And that still is today...hence why...again: I have my own female Disney OC’s that I love to see drawn without those realistic woman-like lips. Also...dumb line for a mouth? What? You’re gonna trash other artists (even some of the best ones) who has perfected that with their own style and doesn’t see it themselves as dumb?”

4. Maybe not stereotypical and it is true that we have actual lips, but just because WE have lips in real life (which we do and even men has it), doesn’t mean ALL animated characters in animation, should as well (especially certain). There’s a difference between fictional cartoon characters and real life people.

5. Male characters don’t look weird with lips. It’s just an artistic choice by the animators. Even a lot of legendary animators have their own artstyle.

6. Not every female character (no matter how old she is) need lips on their mouth. It’s just...again..an artist’s own style of choice. Even Disney artists have their own styles.

7. There is nothing...I repeat: NOTHING wrong with female child & preteen characters looking nearly boyish with a line as a mouth. Even those characters that are fully girly at that age, look way better with lines as mouth since not every female character has to look like Jessica Rabbit for example.

8. Also...really? Your argument: ”Their faces aren't developed enough to pull it off. Same thing with lips” My argument: Do they need to? It’s not YOUR decision to tell what real artists should do. Let them have their own artistic freedom. Even those who did Lilo from Lilo and Stitch, did a better job back in 2002. Cause if Lilo looked like this....my god would that be dull. Not so appealing for me if she had the lips.

Your argument: “Sorry, but that's just part of life and it's a convention of animation.” My argument: You think Disney artists shouldn’t be allowed to have artistic creative freedom to draw whatever style they want?

Ergo: Not giving womanish lips to younger characters is....again, not laziness. It’s an artistic creative choice. And don’t get any ideas of commenting long just because of just disagreeing and assume them more as facts. They’re opinions...not facts. And so much I’ve read here...doesn’t say “opinion” to me. Sorry..they just don’t. It’s mostly “My point is more right because they’re factual”. Look..I’m not offending you either or trying to diss on your edit here. I’m just giving my serious counter-arguments of why I don’t think every artist should give lips to all female characters, let alone young female characters.

So that was MY long message to you. Sorry if this sounded a bit scolding to you...but I’m just trying to prove an opinionated point. Oh...and no need for you to comment a message like this again. Cause it’ll only be the same things over again.

Have a nice day.

So you can say the same opinion over again, but I can't? I'm sorry, but isn't that a little hypocritical. To me, it is laziness and if an artist is going to make it in the art world, they have to be able to accept criticism like this and know that it's not going to appeal to everyone. You're really taking this too personally and you're putting words in my mouth. I consider it lazy because I edit and used to draw a little and drawing mouths like Lilo's is easy and never took much effort for me. And you assume it would be boring if she looked like this because you're used to her regular look. But lips are more accurate to Polynesian people because they are known for their full lips, which is one of their defining physical traits. I'm not trying to bring race into this, but I wouldn't blame people if they were upset about it because of her lack of lips. Also, animation, mainly Disney's style of animation, is meant to imitate realism in animated form. They try to make it look realistic but in different animation styles. So real life does play a part in it. You're really taking all of this too personally. I encourage different art styles and I never said anything that would indicate that I didn't like you seem to feel I did. I'm not going to sugarcoat my opinion because some artists can't take it. If an artist can't handle criticism or their art not being someone's personal taste, they should look for a different career or hobby (Since some, like me, just do art for a hobby). So please, chill out.

You know what? This just goes nowhere. Fine, you accept your opinions and I accept mine. I rather not talk more about this since I would not waste my breath and comment on being too personal or whatever more I have to hear. I didn’t say I disliked your take on Lilo, since i liked it, but I prefer the original design everyday.

Bye bye.
