Background:

Therapist Rick dropped out of school around 7th or 8th grade, later going to college to major in Psychotherapy and Computer science. He was spurred by his own experiences with mental illness, and desire to help others with similar issues.

It was there that he met Diane. They became friends and began dating a few months later. Soon before they graduated they tied the knot, and Diane found out she was pregnant a few months later. Rick began to work on a variety of therapy projects, namely in more experimental mediums. He stuck to video games, improving the technology where possible.

Beth was born, and the two worked to support the family. A few years later Rick discovered interdimensional travel through experimentation, and interplanetary travel wasn't far behind. He searched those dimensions and planets, ecstatic at the types of technology he was able to find, and brought back gifts for Beth and Diane when he could.

He found out about the Council of Ricks from another from a Rick in a nearby dimension, though they gave him a lot of shit for his line of work. He didn't check in with them too often, rather traveling every week or so to learn about new technology, alien therapies, and how he could improve his own work for others. He spent time with Beth and Diane in the meantime, happy to see his little girl grow up.

Things went wrong one day when Beth was 16. He hit a roadbump in a new planet. It was far more dangerous than he had been lead to believe, and his battery ended up running dry. The world was primitive, and it took months for him to get back home, no way to contact his family.

When he finally returned, Beth was distraught. Something felt different. Wrong. Beth sat him down and broke the news that Diane had been killed in a car crash a few weeks back, and Therapist couldn't believe it. He figured he had to have come back to the wrong dimension, and it took him some time to process that he hadn't.

Therapist took care of Beth as best he could, but found himself falling into a deep depression. He was able to stay afloat for about two years, until Beth turned 18. A few days after her 18th birthday he wrote her a note, left her the rest of his money, and left. He gave Beth a way to contact him just in case, but he really wasn't planning on being able to answer or see her again.

The first time he tried, he failed. It took him a while to recover, getting a variety of messages from Beth in the meantime. Therapist went to other planets rarely, and ended up trying once more. Another Rick found him and, oddly enough, helped him back on his feet. Soon after he received a message from Beth, one that said he had grandkids.

Full of regret, Therapist returned to his daughter's life. Beth, now 20, was angry and hurt, but glad that he was alive. He was grateful that she had let him back at all, and set up shop once again in the garage. He got to know Summer and Jerry, and helped take care of Summer when Beth was in class.

He gradually started working on finishing his minor online, and then moved to coding. It was a gradual process, but he worked his way up. When Morty was born, he started to feel some of his motivation return, especially when the boy started having difficulty trying to speak. Therapist started working with him.

He began working on other projects, too. As Morty grew older and his anxiety began to show itself, he began making therapeutic games just for him.

Therapist began to gradually take Morty on adventures when the boy was ready. He still struggles with his depression, but being with his family helps.

Notes:

-The planet he was stuck on had giant predatory/aggressive bugs, which is what led to his fear of bugs. The experience also left him with some PTSD.

-If there was an episode of his dimension, it would likely center around him falling asleep at his keyboard, and setting loose an artificial game environment. (Like one where you have to try to control your heartbeat and anxiety or the environment and creatures will become glitchy,  increasingly aggressive, and harder to maneuver in.)

-The Rick who helped him was Fiction.

-He's a soft Rick. V sweet.

-partially a vent character?

-can communicate pretty well in a dangerous situation, but has a hard time with small talk or trivial conversations.

-probably got Jerry to advertise his projects for him at some point.

-he has a bad back from late nights in his chair

-has reading glasses, but is too stubborn to use them most of the time

-will fall for sweet talk if it's genuine (or at least is made to sound genuine). He's not naive.

-Jerry started to change his mind about Therapist after he started to help Morty with his anxiety.

-He doesn't drink as much as other Rick's anymore. The most he drank was when he left Beth, but cut down a lot after that because he didn't want to screw up their relationship more than he already had.
