Description Another panorama of mine taken back in April 2011 in a place called West 40. It is a narrow dirt road that curves through wetlands and swampy areas eventually ending up near the Slave River.

Not the clearest skies this night but still a beautiful atmosphere and cool air.

this is considered NOT clear? Goodness, I'm so envious of where you live, seeing such a gorgeous show of stars and auroras every night!

Well, not PERFECTLY clear anyway. There was some very diffuse altostratus/cirrostratus cloud blanketing the sky cutting down a bit on clarity but I don't mind

I have never seen the northern lights. Is this the way it looked when you saw it or are the colors different? Would you mind sharing the exposure time and ISO? Nice work, I like the silhouettes and the snow, and especially the trail in the center, leading me into the shot. Good job!

I would put it a stop or so above fully dark adapted eyes, so brighter for sure. The colors are accurate, though a little less subtle than with the naked eye. DSLR's tend to bring out a lot of color light not fully apparent to the naked eye in longer exposures.

hey just curious, how did you manage to take a panorama of an aurora with a 25 second shutter? don't the lights change, making it hard to stitch them together? sweet shot!

It depends. I`ve had some panoramas fail miserably (might post my "fail" shots someday XD) and while this particular aurora was kind of slow-moving, I've had panoramas work out with fast-moving auroras where the conditions must have favored my fortune. Plus, blending tends to work wonders on auroras it seems. Not much fine detail unless you use a relatively short shutter speed, in which case you're shooting a pretty speedy pano anyways

ah! makes sense
do you get auroras in your location all year round?

Technically yes, but during the months between May-August we have so many daylight hours that our skies are simply too bright even in the darkest point of the night to actually see any. I always miss the dark skies during the summer, but the summer light is something else! Great for doing very long exposures of moving clouds without needing a $400 ND400 filter haha
