Description The New Orleans was designed by arcass, my collaborator on the Leonov series and a dear friend of too many years.
This was my contribution to the 2008 Traveller calendar. I had worked for quite a while on getting the New Orleans just right, consulting with arc, and was very happy her first print production was in the calendar Andrew Boulton at Traveller 3D does every year, all proceeds going to charity. I got to contribute two pieces to this years!

So here we see two small SDBs escorting civilian ships through a traffic corridor that passes close to the main population centers of the ocean-world Marianus, the four enormous arcologies in the background.

Thanks for taking a look!

A wonderful close up action shot of a merchant in flight.  Do you have any close up images of those escorts?

I'm afraid not, badruk. Those are very low resolution models that came with Lightwave 7, and they really dont hold up well to closeups. I have thought more than once about building a detailed model based on them, though.

I really like the bright colors and the composition here. The colors remind me of my flights over the Caribbean.
And I just love that sporty little red hot rod on the lower left. Are there any other images of that one?

It's a very nice picture, I love the spacecraft design and rendering
My only problem comes from the background, it's quite difficult to give a scale to the building and I tend to see them as quite small, I would have add some details around, like ships to help giving a scale.

Is this based on the Megatraveller RPG?

This is fantastic - my kind of art - colourful, strong, bold, simple yet evocative.

Fantastic!

I guess you could say it's "based on (the) MegaTraveller (universe)", but the subject may be more evocative of the original Traveller. Certainly the ship that I designed is aimed at the era and I think Drell-7 tried to capture more of a "sci-fi trading sense of wonder" in the image rather than "an interstellar empire reeling under civil war".

Colourful, a megacorp merchant line ship too I see, no independants have a Limited Imperial Charter lol
Nice use of existing models too, the SDBs look like UN Spacey ships sans gun wing pods (that space colony scene that used to ship with lightwave

One of my faves of your Traveller images AND your Alexandria images. The colors evoke Foss.... but in a "good way" I really love the background and building structures (arcologies) , too. Great cockpit details, too. Just a delicious piece of work!

Beautiful scene One of the things I've loved about Traveller is the ships not only look cool, they look like they're there to work. Functionality and grace, and you've got it going on here

Makes me want to get a few pics ready for this weekend My friends and I put on a non-profit gaming convention in October and we're sponsoring a Game Day as a preview/fundraiser this Sunday and I'll be running some Traveller for a few people who haven't ever played before. Looking forward to it I've been playing and running Traveller since a friend saw an ad for it in a Dragon Magazine back in high school (about 30 years ago). Was so intrigued by the Free Trader Beowulf mayday on the cover of the box we had to have it. What a great idea that was!

"Functionality and grace"? You've just become my best friend!!!

Drell-7 and I both try to design from a practical and usable angle. The Alexandria was designed to work AND be sleek. And if you look at the Leonov images in Drell-7's gallery you can see a great fusion of our (similar) ship design abilities at work.

Always happy for new friends I've got some of the big deckplan maps that FASA put out all those years ago and the Alexandria is in the set. Very cool to see it's beauty in this way. I have seen the Leonov sets and I can see what you mean

I was just looking over some of my old Traveller game things, looking for inspiration. "Adventure Class Ships, Vol II". And there is the Alexandia deck plans!

Fantastic!! Silly me I never realized that. EXTREMELY cool The envelopes are kind mashed flat and a bit worse for wear but all the maps and books are intact. I have Adventure Class Ships Volume I and Volume II, and I don't know if you did it too, but I also have Star Port Module Number One: Hotel Complex. I pulled them out and they are all in my hand as we speak

karanua In reply to NICELabs [2012-03-18 02:10:54 +0000 UTC]

That hotel complex set the scene for lots of home grown designs for structures designed for vaccuum environments, it had never occurred to any of us before that release to design fixed structures using the high guard ship design rules. A sweet pack too. Did you get the great aslan pack with the sleek and curvy aslan ships? A total reversal from later aslan stuff that looked more klingon than anything else.

NICELabs In reply to karanua [2012-03-18 12:53:45 +0000 UTC]

I never had the Aslan set, but I know a friend did. I don't recall the deck plans, but I recall thumbing through the accompanying booklet. The only other deck plans I have are for a 2000 ton Zhodani Vlezhdatl class Strike Cruiser that FASA put out.

...and cool Looks like we can still get them all in .pdf format from Far Future: [link]

karanua In reply to NICELabs [2012-03-18 13:36:41 +0000 UTC]

I used to have quite a few of the packs but unfortunately they aren't amongst the survivors of 20 plus years living out of a suitcase as a corporate gypsy. We've the King Richard still, part of the aslan pack and that hotel module besides which we've all the skyraiders trilogy, excellent set of adventures they were
So this stuffs still available then? Even better but pdf deckplans are about as much use as a chocolate coffee pot unless of course one of your players happens to still own an A0+ drawing board to enlarge them for use as game surfaces.

NICELabs In reply to karanua [2012-03-18 14:04:48 +0000 UTC]

Very true... though I guess you could take the pdf to a printer with a large-scale copier and run off a set. We've got a few of those around here so when I eventually build up my library I'll most likely go that route.

karanua In reply to NICELabs [2012-03-19 00:04:35 +0000 UTC]

I think I'd sooner have the boxed version to getting large scale plans from a scan (which is all the pdf is).

NICELabs In reply to karanua [2012-03-19 00:23:50 +0000 UTC]

I totally agree. Original is always best. Barring that though, a scan will keep us going in the interim.
