Description No matter how sophisticated survey sensors get, eventually, there comes a time when, in NASA parlance, Ground Truth is required to really know a new place. Here a team of explorers boldly go with rock hammers and field lenses, in the eternal search for the unknown.

Daz/Studio 3, Unusual Rock Formations, and Uzilite's Major Cache standing in for a hardened exploration suit.
Thanks for taking a look!

An amazing proof of the Human need to explore. The rock outcropping the two explorers are standing on has an almost sphinx-like look to it. Is that a third explorer on the ledge to their below and to their left?

Wow. This really gives the feel of genuine space exploration. Damn fine job

What an amazing experience it would be to stand there

I may be reading into it - but I imagine this is the surface of Titan...

I started out with the intent of making it Titan-but, alas, Saturn is visible only on incredibly rare occasions. The rings DO get that open, though, as seen from Titan. In the end, I decided not to specify. Could be some other star system--but in the back of my mind, yeah, I was working on Titan! Lets hope we'll get a view like this from there some day!

Well, once the aliens go to phase two of that storm on Saturn's poles, Titan's orbit will shift causing it to shed a significant share of its atmosphere !

Here's what I'm talking about: [link]

There obviously is some VERY exotic stuff happening at Saturn's poles, and the Clarke fan in me deeply wants your scenario to be true! Aside from the drama and beauty of that image, it's very heartening to see some real deep spacecraft design. The SF community has bee over run by space-going airliners and boats.
I actually want Titan to hold onto its atmosphere, though. It helps insulate the surface, and, one day, all that methane will come in handy to refuel our ships!

So far I've only hit the South Pole of Saturn. That's nothing compared to the weirdness on the opposite side

Titan might have experienced just enough disturbance to now allow rally nice views of Saturn

In the mass media, spaceship design has actually regressed (I feel that way at least). And don't even get me started on alien designs !

The focus seems to be largely on technique of presentation - which admittedly can be very seductive. But hopefully we'll eventually get through the infatuation and get back to the actual idea being the driving force

OOH! Can't wait to see what's brewing in the North!

I keep hoping there is SOME spot on Titan where its possible to see that classic view of Saturn that Bonestell imagined so long ago (and you recreated masterfully!)

I agree with you, in the general culture, there used to be a much better understanding of realistic space design. Or at least an acceptance of it. And, yeah, Alien design is pretty laughable, these days.

I hope you're right, that the IDEAS will become important again. Until then, I'll keep doing it because I love it, for myself and a few other geeks.

It's safe to say that in the general culture, there used to be a better understanding of EVERYTHING !

When I went to school we learned a lot of different things. It seem the emphasis now is learning how to take multiple choice tests. (BTW I'm speaking about the US - I gather things are very different elsewhere)

Very nice. So few images really capture that old school feel for planetary exploration. Space marines with guns are a dime a dozen, but guys in hostile environment suits exploring great wonders? Not so much. Bold palette and the ringed planet really looms and brings home the sense of otherworldliness. Just a cool flow to the composition... being panoramic with quite really being a full panorama.

And did I mention the geese? No. I didn't. I just wanted you to appreciate that fact.

I do consider not mentioning the geese a huge kindness, and proof that you are a good friend!
