Description Two manned Interstellar spacecraft undergo check-outs from crews in work pods. They've settled into orbit around the small asteroidal moon of their target world, which seems capable of sustaining human life.

Rendered and modeled in Lightwave 10. Nebula done in Photoshop. Thanks for taking a look!

While inhabiting planets is fine and all it's a little like the first amphibian crawling out of the sea and crossing the continent to get back into the sea. I guess perspectives would differ.

Love the lighting on this one! Lightwave is awesome program. It was the first 3d program I learned. And if I had the $$$, I'd go back. Or switch to Maya for that matter. But, Blender is working out for me, thus far. Great work on this one!

Just adding to what others have said previously--a very nice rendition of a Daedalus interstellar spacecraft.Β

Β Β  I remember seeing this ships when I was about 7 or 8 years old.Β  The program was COSMOS, if I am not mistaken.Β  Thought no one would remember them.Β  Needless to say to make them in art form.Β  And boy are they beautiful.Β  Thank you for making me remember.

BTW, do you believe in warp? Doctor White at NASA do. Someone there thinks that he could obtain some result some day. If warp came, all these ships would be obsolete in its concept. I'm not a Star Trek fan, just a fan of anything that can take us faster and deeper in space. On the contrary, in fact, I'm a fan of those ships, better than those damned ringed ships (Mr. Rademarek's Enterprise, you know).

Me too! Or something better. The engineers are now playing around with an idea for antimatter initiated fusion propulsion these days!

Urus-28 In reply to Thomas-Peters [2014-11-22 22:34:06 +0000 UTC]

I'm quite sure it can work.... But antimatter is rather expensive at present time

Once in a Star Trek novel, Mr. Scott referred to packets of antimatter. I had the distinct impression that what they did was to simply convert cold matter into anti-matter, for mixing in the warp core.

I don't remember to have seen the way they produce antimatter in Star Trek, but perhaps you are right

Very nice model and scene. I still have to think of that old Carl Sagan book where i saw the sketch of this ship first.

Yep. I'm old enough to have a first edition of that book! Rick Sternbach, who went on to production designing for Star Trek: The Next Generation did the starship illustrations for Cosmos!

Love your version of this classic ! Im digging the shield cap better than the deploy-able dust shield of the original.

Thomas-Peters In reply to alderfek [2014-11-22 16:17:11 +0000 UTC]

Thanks! Yeah, I was just trying to rethink the erosion shield a bit. There's nother part of it, that gets released to travel ahead of the ship as it turns around to start decelerating, too.

A great render.

We were clearly reading the same books! The basic design is actually from the British Interplanetary Society'sΒ Project Daedalus The manned version is somewhat bigger, and has a number of speculative design Β changes. I'm glad you like it!

The whole Star Wars craze re-ignited the RW "space race" in the imaginations of many of us Americans. A lot of those collections of concept drawings were re-issued as Real Science reminded us of the kinds of space opera dreams we had enjoyed just prior to Star Wars taking off.
