Description
Skarloey was built in 1865 at Fletcher Jennings in England for use on the Skarloey Railway on Sodor. He arrived to the island on Boat, and transported to Crovans Gate by S&M #2 'Neil' the same year. He and his brother Rheneas, who arrived later that year, worked the line for many many years. During that time, Skarloey received his cab and trailing truck, went through several different liveries, and was given a sab door to protect his crew from the Sudrian Weather, which was later donated to Rheneas. He was withdrawn from service and left in the sheds while Rheneas ran the line single handedly. He was left in the open shed until 1954, when he damaged himself badly on a run and was sent to Crovans Gate Works for a overhaul. He returned to service in 1958, wearing a dark blue livery. He was given this paint to trial the publics reception to the new liveries. The test was a success, and the blue was put onto engines like SKR #3 'Sir Handel' and SKR #9 'Ivo Hugh'. He was repainted into SKR red the following year.

He kept this condition until 1969 when he was put in for overhaul. The SKR realized the open rear cab was doing the crews no favors on days with bad weather, so they looked to the Talyllyn Railway's #1 'Talyllyn' for inspiration for the new cab design. He emerged from Crovans Gate works in 1973 with the new cab, and has stayed relatively the same since.
