Description Just some paint sketches to experiment with different watercolor techniques...For some reason I always gravitate towards flamboyantly crested alternadinos when I'm playing with different media, I don't know why! That's pretty much how the Counterdinos got their start. These guys could easily be Counterdinos (either true hadrosaurs or "hadrosauropods") based on morphology, but their gaudy color schemes don't support that interpretation. I've been playing with this idea of a more fish-like dinosaurian clade ([link] ), so maybe they fall into that category. Anyway, it makes little difference as they were really just warm-up sketches while I was hanging out with my buddy and his girlfriend...I'll probably scrap 'em soon. (The sketches, that is, not my buddy and his girlfriend.)

My favorites are the one in the middle and the right bottom corner

I'm glad you like them! I'm most partial to upper left and lower right. But then, I'm a sucker for blue/violet color schemes.

tip: set the bright colours against their opposites, slightly desaturated, for most contrast and impact.

HEADSHAPES! WOHOOOOO!

I want to have one and hug it and squeeze it and luff it forever, but I am afraid I'd pop it and cover the place with its day-glo mucusy fluids that probably wouldn't shift off the the carpet. I bet they sound like watermelons when you flick their sides.

EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE MELONHEADS!!! You've seen right through their disguise--much like watermelons, they camouflage themselves in stripy pajamas to engender uncontrolled hugging and then burst under pressure, ensuring seed dispersal and the survival of the next generation. Or is it baby tapirs that do this...?

They sound hollow yet satisfyingly solid when you thump them, just like golden retrievers!

I have to rake pictures of the tapir skeleton we have at uni

I think that only works if you swallow the tapir and it grows inside of you... Haha! I play bongos on our golden lab's head she always asks "why me?" but never moves away!

Be sure to get close-ups of its trunk bones, if you can!

Thank you! I can't believe how out of practice I am with painting, though. I need to work on that, maybe tonight if I have the energy.

They are really cool although they are only scraps. I like the color scheme, especially of the right one in the bottom.
May I steal a little of your color scheme?

Huh, interesting to think of the counterdinos as sor adically colored! I always pictured them with such dark colors to contrast the stark coutershading, but these really pack a punch! I like all of them ... i think the lower right-most guy looks oily slick, though!

thomastapir In reply to whalewithlegs [2010-06-16 19:45:16 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, it's because of the, um, colorfulness??, that I don't consider them "true" Counterdinos. Of course there's always the possibility of genetic overlap due to proximity of panspermic "seeding regions," ala Chimerapes.

I may have to make a separate folder for these guys if I keep producing them. What do you think, "Piscidinos," maybe...? ("Ichythyosaurs" is otherwise occupied, last I heard!)

Well, they like long walks on the beach and snuggling by a warm fire on cold winter nights....

Actually man, I have to confess there isn't much of a story behind them! Um...Let's see, those were the last two I did...Obviously these all use slightly different watercolor techniques, mainly in terms of the wetness of the paper and the degree to which I was mixing colors. The top right guy seemed to be moving towards that kind of rough, old-school kids'-book vibe I like so much (i.e. [link] ), so I kind of went with that. Bottom right is a little slicker, a little more streamlined; I was thinking of it as more piscine, and the markings had a decorative, almost Egyptian feel to me, so I tried to accentuate that (i.e. the "false eye" above the orbit). I guess it could also be read as facing to the right, with a little effort, making it a kind of Amphisbaenomorph ([link] ).

That's about it, that's all I got...I'm glad you like them!

I was asking more about specific biological information, but that's interesting too! lol

OK, question: Bottom right. Row of white dots along his bill. Are those teeth showing or just a reflection?

thomastapir In reply to GrimKarasu [2010-06-16 19:56:17 +0000 UTC]

Hah, I gotcha! Yeeeah, I'm pretty vague on the biology here, except that they are distantly related to terrestrial dinosaurs and have an admixture of fishy DNA. I pictured them with smooth skin, more like amphibians, and possibly six legs (I've had dreams about hexapod fish dinos, oddly enough). I'm still unclear on metabolism--I'm thinking they might be quasi-homeothermic in the same way as tuna, able to regulate their body temperature to some extent. Definitely not "cold-blooded," tail-dragging reptilians.

Yeah, those are (*wince*) teeth on bottom-right...I kind of regret adding those now, considering I didn't envision these animals (or at least this clade) as particularly toothy. Let's say they're flat, crushing 'n grinding tooth batteries along the lines of orthodox terrestrial hadrosaur dentition.

No, I was going to say, I like the teeth. He's got like this gangsta sneer going on. He's sayin', "Yeah, bitch, my crest is more aesthetically appealing than yours. Whut."
