Description The title pretty much says it all; very early Tetrays involved in a mass migration. There's no particular reason to think this, but I imagine them as juveniles all schooling together for safety. Perhaps migrating into the open ocean to join the adult population.

These guys are the most primitive Tetrays I've depicted or indeed imagined, preceding even the Plioray ([link] ) on the family tree. Much earlier than this and there would be little to indicate their "Tetrayality" (?). They still have relatively short necks at this stage, but possess all the major hallmarks of the clade--semi-detached heads, hypertrophied cephalic lobes (perhaps more than I really intended), separated and clearly defined pelvic fins. They swim like sea turtles, and can't yet breathe gaseous oxygen.

I purposely did these as simplified, blurry silhouettes, hopefully evoking the sense that you're getting a shadowy patrial glimpse into the distant and mysterious evolutionary history of the Tetray lineage. The apparent simplicity of the forms belies the amount of effort I put into them, though--I wanted them perfectly symmetrical, so I did half the body as Illustrator paths and then reflected them (about the long axis) to create the other side as a mirror image. It's the same process I use to create bilaterally symmetrical forms for 3D models, and it's very time-consuming--especially because in this case I had to go back and reflect half the body every time I changed the position of the pectoral wings to ensure perfect symmetry. It's not evident from looking at these, but I did put a lot of work into them, really! : /

I love tetrays! I want them NOW in my aquarium! (But they'd have to be goldfish-sized )

Would work as the DVD cover for Blue Planet II: Worlds Beyond Ours.

Nice to see more tetrays!

re: Blue Planet II--Oh man, how cool would that be??
For years I've been waiting for Barlowe to do an Expedition sequel set either underwater or in a tropical rainforest. No luck yet, but he's still young.

Hah, just about everybody so far has suggested something like wallpaper, a screensaver, an album cover, etc...I kind of like that. It's a very graphic image, so it seems fitting to me, and it's not something I would have thought of myself.

I'm just waiting for Barlowe to stop mucking around with demons and get back to xenobiology.

It's certainly more artistic than scientifically informative. How about a calendar, then?

Same here!

A calendar works for me!
Hmm, dA should actually offer that as a print option...Get a calendar with your choice of faves from a particular artist, or even multiple artists. I'd go for that!

Nice to see more from these 'rays'.
Will there be any more soon?

I'm not sure...I've got a few more ideas up my sleeve, so I'll have to wait and see!

I love this. My first thought was actually, "ha, this would make a great poster for a druggie with a black light." And then it reminded me of mothman, in a weird way. I think it was the moon-like illumination.

Anyway, I'm digging it.

It's kind of like you're the silent observer of the future seas, watching these guys swim overhead as a midday sun shines down from directly above.

oh, hey, i've been watching Avatar and i keep thinking you'd really enjoy the creatures .. they're almost all fusions of 2 animals ..

1) [link]

2) [link] slightly better pictures sometimes

Hah, those are awesome! Man, you're dead right, they're right up my alley. Some of them even resemble creatures I've seen before, or come up with myself. The Dragonfly reminds me of Mark Ferrari's Butterfly Dragon ([link] ) from Chaosium's Field Guide to the Dreamlands (Call of Cthulhu RPG supplement). The Boar-Q-Pine recalls Harry Harrison's Porcuswine from the Stainless Steel Rat prequels (in that case they were giant, genetically modified foodstock animals designed to survive on hostile colony worlds). That penguin/otter hybrid totally freaked me out because I had something very similar in the works as part of the same universe that spawned the Hadropithecoids back in 2000 or so...I should revisit some of those creatures, actually.

Some of the best chimerical animals I've seen are photo mods on the site Worth1000 (www.worth1000.com). When they do their "Bestiality" or "Chimerae" contests, people submit stuff that's just mindblowing. Anywho, thanks for turning me on to all those cool new creatures!

Beautiful! They look like ocean butterflies.

Just out of curiousity, what evolutionary advantage does the second set of fins give them over regular rays?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

thomastapir In reply to Violetlight83 [2009-03-13 02:28:50 +0000 UTC]

Thanks! re: butterflies--that was semi-intentional. It's always bugged me that rays suffer from that misnomer "devilfish," so I wanted to present them as kind of angelic instead...Like snow angels.

Hmm, the most obvious advantage I can imagine is enhanced maneuverability--powerful forelimbs for locomotion and hydrodynamic rear flippers for steering. I'd be curious to hear somebody else's take on "reverse engineering" the evolution of their body design, though.

I imagined laying on my back and watching them swim over me, like through glass, or a projection on the ceiling in a room, it just seems really neat and calming.
