Description Found beached on a tidal mudflat at a classified location in Cambodia. Preliminary analysis indicates the being died of radiation exposure over 10K years ago, though no traces of its presumed "lifeboat" have yet been recovered.

Autopsy Report - 1985 - Dângrêk base

THE CONTENTS OF THIS REPORT ARE HIGHLY CLASSIFIED. FAILURE TO CEASE READING BY A PERSON OR PERSONS UNAUTHORIZED TO READ THIS REPORT MAY LEAD TO INTERNMENT, INTERROGATION, EXECUTION OR RECRUITMENT

PREAMBLE

Specimen ASTRA-1 was discovered at [REDACTED] in Cambodia in 1978 by fishermen fishing in the nearby [REDACTED] River. Khmer Rouge soldiers stationed in [REDACTED] located and retrieved the Specimen, transporting it via army truck to [REDACTED]. The Specimen was then transported via train to Phnom Penh, where it was pickled in industrial alcohol and put on display for high ranking members of the Khmer Rouge. The alcohol was utterly unnecessary for the preservation of the specimen, it not having fared any better or worse then when it was exposed to the elements. Of interest is the case of one Khmer Rouge soldier who while on duty broke open the seal of the vat the specimen was being displayed in and drank some of the alcohol. The solider reportedly died of a massive allergic reaction later in the night.

In 1978 the Vietnamese army took Phnom Penh and with that the Specimen. The People's Republic of Kampuchea held onto the Specimen until I.L.U.M.I.N-8 successfully purchased it. It was then transported via aircraft to Dângrêk base.

PRE AUTOPSY NOTES

Specimen is approximately seven (7) foot tall and four (4) foot at it's widest. The majority of its mass is located in the cranium, with the rest of the body including the limbs making less than 40% of its total mass. The exterior of the creature appears to be made out of hard shell like ceramic. The "skin" observed between the joints appeared to be constructed out of a flexible but tough substance. The limbs of the Specimen appeared to be hollow. Before autopsy there was controversy among the surgeons present as to whether the exterior was the creatures skin or some form of deceptively organic space suit. No orifices could be observed. Two large paddles were oberved either side of the head.

AUTOPSY FINDINGS

Penetration was at first problematic, but the shell of the Specimen was breached after ten (10) minutes of exposure to blow torches. The shell of the creature was discovered to be made out of pure silica fibers at a thickness of three (3) inches.

Close examination of the joints revealed three unique chemical signatures (Not including Industrial Alcohol). The first appeared to be carbon fiber. The second was Octabenzone, a substance that absorbs uv light. The third was acid and biochemical traces that corresponded to the Tonle Sap-Mekong Peat Swamp Forests.

When exposed the interior did not release any indefinable toxic chemicals/life forms or trigger any apparent self destruct mechanisms. The interior was perfectly preserved, due to the exterior working as a seal.

The lifeform appeared to be ammonia based.

The largest organ was the brain at 9,000 cubic centimeters. The brain was domed, covering the top hemisphere of the cranium.

At the crown of the dome a cluster of nerves that appeared to have the same function as a spinal cord was attached. These nerves traveled the vertical length of the Specimen, and unlike in humans they were located in the center of the body, not the back.

Directly under the dome and surrounding the nerve cord were four (4) two chambered hearts, with a fifth four chambered heart at the base of the body.  The specimen seemed to lack a Lymphatic system or any sign of an immune system.

The Specimen had a single lung with a volume of 20,00 cubic centimeters. The Specimen two organs taking the function of both liver, spleen and gallbladder. The lung connected to a series of holes at the bottom of the body.

Close examination revealed one sphincter on the lower right lateral side. This sphincter led to an extremely basic digestive system, lacking teeth, stomach or lower intestine. This system ended in a bladder connected to a cloacae on the end of a flexible trunk. Inspection revealed that the lung and the bladder were connected, despite the series of holes working to both inhale and exhale air.

Nerves leading from the brain revealed six (6) compound eyes located on the upper hemisphere of the Specimen. They were positioned to give the Specimen a three hundred and sixty (360) degree view of it's surroundings. Inspection of the ideas revealed them to have 26   photo-receptor types in all eyes.

Without exception, all external orifices had shell like plates that could be clamped down over the orifices. Without exception, all the the orifices were clamped so tightly that it was highly difficult opening them.

Close analysis of the cells of the Specimen revealed intense damage at the cellular level. The dry material on the exterior of the Specimen seemed to be an advanced stage of this cellular damage.

Attached to where the Nerve cord meet the head was a baseball sized organ, with shell plating similar to the exterior of the shell. Attempts to examine and then remove the organ revealed that it was in fact still alive. The creature seemed to be gnawing at the brain stem of the creature that it was attached to, as well as growing fine tendrils across the surface of the dead brain. All attempts to interfere with both the living organ and the specimen were halted, but the creature died later that day. Close examination revealed the plating to be even tougher than the exterior plate, and when cracked open revealed a golf ball sized lump of recently dead brain matter, exhibiting the same signs of cellular damage as the Specimen, albeit on a far lesser scale.

After autopsy the Specimen's organs were removed and cryogenically frozen. The shell and remaining flesh were placed back in the industrial alcohol vat. All surgeons present went through the required three weeks of quarantine without any issues. All information gathered has been entered into the I.L.U.M.I.N-8 database.

Signed, Dr. Raul Steins

Cool story bro, even without the dragons 'n shit!   I love that part about the unfortunate, um, "thirsty" Cambodian soldier.  : p

So now I'm dying to know the nature of that secondary "softball" organ/ism--offspring, parasite, backup brain, or the true "Officer" itself, with the rest of the "specimen" being merely biomechanical life support...?

heh, I had almost forgotten about writing this.

The idea I was playing off is that most interstellar civilizations become so advanced at biotechnology and genetic manipulation that they transform their entire species into a form of caste based lifeforms, something that aids in the sustainability of interstellar civilizations. This also causes a fairly ruthless attitude to individual organisms in this case system, hence why the scientists weren't sure if penetrating the exoskeleton wouldn't activate a self destruct mechanism or some other booby trap.

The Softball organism is actually a black-box. Being an interstellar society, a recovery mission for a ship can take millennia.  So the Softball, inserted while the larger creature is a infant, protects the valuable information the creature encountered (and whatever killed it) by slowly eating the brain and "copying" the necessary information before it can rot. The Softball is a organism with an immensely slow metabolism with a life cycle of several million years, so a recovery mission or simply another expedition will almost certainly encounter it before it too can die.

I love the ideas in this, but why would the black-box die during the autopsy if it's so durable? You wrote that they didn't disturb it once they found it, but it died anyway.

Thomas' OP stated that the larger creature died from radiation exposure. I extrapolated in my comment that the creature's surface had traces of "Octabenzone, a substance that absorbs uv light" and carbon fiber.

The backstory was that the creature was genetically manipulated in such a way that a side effect was contact with radiation, even in the form of light from our sun, was fatal to it. This carried on to the Black Box, so when it was revealed the ambient light it was exposed to was enough to fatally poison it.

Don't know if it's even possible to be organic and die on contact with photons, but w/e

Thanks for saying u liked it

We have humans who are allergic to it (solar radiation, photons) to a fatal degree, so it wouldnt be so far fetched.

Can I draw a living restoration of this fella? I want to draw it from two perspectives, to experiment a bit.
