Description Defensive ritualistic bioconstruct fabricated by an ancient maritime superciv:

thomastapir.deviantart.com/art…

This one's primarily crustacean and chelonian, with a bit of cetacean, octopus, and marine toad for good measure. I guess it could just as easily be some sort of Lovecraft creature/deity--maybe a minor (?) Great Old One...?

Based on a gooseneck barnacle cluster featured in Susan Middleton's Spineless: Portraits of Marine Invertebrates, the Backbone of Life. Please see also

Forgive the sloppy shading, I was originally just going to post the line art but I got carried away.  : p

Truly amazing concept!
It actually reminds me less of Lovecraft's original creatures and more of Mike Mignola's (and the other artists' working on hellboy, bprd, etc) lovecraftian beings...

I don't know how familiar you are with the comics but in each one, some concept art is included as well. I reckon you'd find some designs of your liking there

Yeah, I often like the BPRD concept art more than the comics themselves.  : p

Well I wouldn't say I like them more as the comics themselves are pretty damn cool too... Let's say I like both equally

Aw, aren't hydras are like pizza, or orgasms...?  When they're great they're phenomenal and even when they're "average" they're still pretty good!

That's a cool way to see it xD We should make hydra-pizza with orgasm-flavor

That sounds like either the best or worst possible flavor of all time!

I'd like to interpret it as something good

Or maybe it contains something like that

This thing is beautiful, and if it has the (frankly kaiju-like) proportions I imagined it with to start it's also utterly terrifying. Very interesting chimera, nice use of the barnacles there.

Thank you very much! Rarely am I complimented on my use of the barnacles, least of all by the park rangers at the Oregon coast.  : p

Hm, I guess I was thinking of this thing around the mass of an elephant, maybe? But it can be as big as you need it to be for the purposes of your campaign world and/or mental health!

What do the park rangers at Oregon know?

Elephant sized barnacle hydra still sounds pretty terrifying.

I call them "Surf Nazis," and I'd like to see them contend with an elephant-sized barnacle!  ON OREGON COAST, CRUSTACEAN FILTERS YOU

That is marvelous. I am in love with the heads.

thomastapir In reply to raygungoth [2015-11-13 01:53:12 +0000 UTC]

That seems appropriate, as Hydra tend to love with their heads rather than their hearts.  They're seeing a therapist about their intimacy issues, though, so I guess there's still hope they'll change.  : /
