Description A stunning and totally unexpected find on the Columbia River waterfront just east of the I-5 bridge, 15 June 2015. I believe this is the Oregon Swallowtail Papilio oregonius. I was able to get very close to it for an extended period of time--I suspect it was absorbed in sucking mineral salts or other such nutrients from the sand.

I know, right? The texture created by the parallel rows of scales reminds me of linen canvas or corduroy.
