Description

The Manticore class is an iteration on one of my favorite STO ships, the Chimera heavy destroyer.

I designed the Manticore based on Jason "Vektor" Lee's original design submitted to Cryptic as part of our "Design the Enterprise" contest in 2011. We incorporated that ship into the game as the Chimera class heavy destroyer. Because this ship has complex animations in the game I had limited room to maneuver with the new design, though to be honest the Chimera itself is so good I didn't really want to stray that far.

This model is based on Adam Gibson's original model of the Chimera. Adam also created the material it uses.

You can see more screenshots of the Manticore on my tumblr: thomasthecat.tumblr.com/post/1…

I enjoyed flying this ship in STO.  I have a question about design philosophy, if you don't mind my asking...

What was the (out of universe) source for the "4-nacelle" ships like this one?  I'm thinking of the Concord, Presidio, Geneva and in KDF the Bortas, Tygokor, Klingzai.

Obviously the TNG Constellation, and later VOY Promethius, designs clearly lead to the new Jupiter, Eclipse and Cheynne classes.

I don't see why they didn't use Manticore as the class name in the first place, considering that there was already a Chimera class: the U.S.S. Portland, which has a the registry of NCC-57418, and was mentioned in the DS9 episode of "The Die is Cast".

I've had a pet peeve with that class's name ever since she debuted with that damned name, because I have a very hard time believing that the Portland was the same class as the ill-named Chimera class that the Manticore here is related to. Because the Chimera herself must have a registry no higher than NCC-57417, and I think it is even lower than that. I have half a mind to just eject the STO Chimera class from my personal canon, use one of the designs from the ASDB designs for the Portland, and just have the Manticore her own thing. Either that, or call her what Jason Lee called her originally: the Magellanic class. Because there has never been two different designs of Federation Starfleet classes that have shared the same name, unless one of them was a variant of a base design, and I think that is how it should stay. Unless I'm expected to believe that Jason Lee's design is about at least half a century old.

On a final note, she looks good (perhaps even better) with the AWACS-style equipment pod. Are those torpedo tubes or pulse phaser cannons I see? Oh, and sorry about the rant. Incidentally, the Heavy Destroyer designation is fantastic, because other than the quad nacelle arrangement and mission pod, she has a configuration not unlike the Detroyat-class Heavy Destroyer.

The T6 TtC treatment strikes again, and with the same level of brilliance that wowed me with your Pathfinder design!

I wasn't terribly fond of the original Chimera model; it just seemed too plain or unfinished. It was a shame because the nacelle and tactical mode animations were unique and exciting to see everytime. I wanted to like it so much being it was a veteran reward, and now I finally can with this souped up fully-realized version. I just truly enjoy flying this puppy around in sector space, and it always looks ready for business when it arrives into a mission map. The bridge officer seating and console are top notch, but only downside being that it wasn't a fleet level ship straightaway.

My thanks to you for this version, Adam's Chimera, and Vektor's original contribution for ultimately making the Manticore possible, and me a very happy STO player.

I really like what you did with the Chimera. The mission pod on top really helps balance out the belly.

Nice remix of the classic Enterprise look. I like it. Very streamlined and badass-looking.

A beautiful design. When I saw the announcement on STO's Facebook page, I jumped on STO as soon as I could; have been flying her since.

Hmm, tasty remix of the original, I quite like it! Vektors original design was easily the most STO flavored game in the finalist group. It just oozed that post modern (By star trek standards) feel that STO seemed to be trying to push. This takes another step or two forward, even!

That disk on top of her hull reminds me of the radome on real-life AWACS aircraft such as the E-2 Hawkeye  and E-3 Sentry.
