Hmm particle beam, railcannon or missile?
By the appearance (no visible exhaust slots for missile launch) I'd go for one of the first two variants.
But whatever it is: Imagine standing at the shore, enjoying a sunset and you hear a soft *thump* coming from somewhere inland. While you still think "something heavy must've dropped back there at the construction site" you hear another *thump*. And then louder more *thump thump*.
And then these get louder and louder until it shakes your bones and these things march to the waterline, brace themselves and spit hellfire towards the horizon.
