Yes all handcarved, I don't know how to do otherwise...

Nice! There are other ways of carving, such as a dremel tool with carving bits/ intarsia-sanding/ CNC if you're rich. I wish I could get more practice in with a chisel, though. Nice work!

Well I'm not a pro at carving, but there are other methods of sculpting. Dremel tools with carving bits and sanding with a drum sander/ intarsia/ CNC if you're rich. but yeah, Thats cool! I wish I could carve. Nice work!

Thorleifr In reply to DMSscroller [2012-04-29 13:16:17 +0000 UTC]

Of course, but nothing beats a razor sharp blade cut. I do use a dremel occasionnaly for rough digging work, but I find it a bit messy and dusty and avoid it as much a possible. And CNC is like someone else doing the job... I'd just miss the whole pleasure of carving...

I design and build theater sets for a living. I don't care if you use power tools or hand tools; both take skill to create works of this beauty. Very nice!

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Thorleifr In reply to oldsoulmasquer [2009-11-26 08:05:55 +0000 UTC]

Thanks!
I actually often find it more difficult with power tools. Easy to mess up a piece. It just goes faster and makes straight lines, but I avoid them when possible... and they do so much nasty dust!

Accuracy have sure payed off in the details there, and the texture in the background seems very even and smooth.

And the warm glow in it, just wonderful.

Lovely to see people still doing things by hand now in the era of the power tools

Though I must admit, I did use power tools to make it, except for the knotwork motif...

Your carvings are pretty intense mate, love the 'Heroet' one but this is awesome too. Do you use a router or any other power tools to get the depth or do you just use chisels and gouges? Just wondering because it looks too level to be done by eye and hand.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Thorleifr In reply to sculpted1 [2009-10-24 13:10:27 +0000 UTC]

Thanks,
for the pencil boxes' inside, I used a machine, router like but with the piece of wood moving on a rail instead of the drill, to make the cavities straight.

I used a router to make Heddal -> [link] but Heorot was hand carved...

Using a router doesn't help this much, and is hugely noisy, and I don't get much pleasure out of using it. The time saved wasn't as important as expected, plus you encounter other difficulties...

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

sculpted1 In reply to Thorleifr [2009-10-24 13:35:51 +0000 UTC]

No probs. That's awesome, I also get a lot more enjoyment out of working by hand so it makes me like your work even more. How long did Heorot take you?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Thorleifr In reply to sculpted1 [2009-10-26 09:28:32 +0000 UTC]

I didn't count time for this one, but a rough estimation is 50 hours.
Heddal, with the router, took 37 hours.
