Yeah, so I had no time for a full on proper family picture today so I thought I'd show you the Rarity X Sunset Shimmer family. Surprise! There's no kids!In all honesty, I don't really see either of these two wanting children. Sure, they probably like them well enough, but I think Rarity would like to avoid the mes of small children if she could, and Sunset? That girl would probably have a breakdown trying to raise a gerbil. They babysit for Sweetie Belle often enough and, whenever they feel themselves thinking that maybe a baby would be nice, they go and do a bit of babysitting and then quickly remember why their favourite part about hanging out with children is the bit where they get to give them back at the end.
And, besides, they're both too busy for children; Rarity is a full-time business woman and fashion designer with shops open all over Equestria, and Sunset is busy being a Princess and exploring alternate dimensions and whatnot. No point in having a kid if you're not going to be around for most of it's life and, when you are are, being absolutely shattered and just wanting bed.
They also like their free time, their sleep, and having their things where they want them without little hooves and horns moving them about and breaking them. We all know how Rarity can be with Sweetie Belle, and I just don't think she'd voluntarily put herself through looking after a child.
Sunny and Rarara do, though, donate to an awful lot of children's charities, and go and do a lot of work with them as well so, even if they don't have any children of their own, they're helping support a good many of them. In a way, that gives them the most kids, I suppose.

Short answer; I thought it'd be funny - it may not seem that way right now but it's in the 'Daft Nex Gen'-verse for a reason, trust me.
In-universe answer; Sunset comes back to equestria after she realises she can't afford further education in the human world, but she still goes back and too to keep in touch. All this dimension hopping gets Sunny interested in portal magic and other dimensions. She masters the magic and frequently travels to other dimensions, spreading friendship wherever she goes and all that. Celestia and Twilight agree that this means Sunset is ready to be an Alicorn Princess TM, and Celestia goes ahead and makes her one because why not? Despite the fact that Sunset really should be Princess of Friendship 2.0, she can't, because that's Twilight's title, and so she's Princess of Portals.
Yes, this is a bit of a bullshit reason but I really just wanted an excuse to put wings on my favourite horse

I love how the pic and story went, but it DOES seem like lately some stories involving Rarity INDEED involve Rarity not being able to devote herself to kids. A friend of mine is one of those people two with a future-gen Rarity mostly without kids. Any reason that catches on with people in more recent years? indeed this feels like a more "recent" thing.
P.S.: Is the fact Sunset's an alicorn INDEED a reference to Forgotten Friendship OR something from earlier? I notice Forgotten Friendship has those in the EqG fanbase still now TRULY in love with Sunset once more. XD

The reason I decided not to give Rarity any kids is in part due to how successful her business is becoming and how much time she'll have to spend devoted to it. She has to keep up with all the stores, many more than the current three in this future, and keep designing and making dresses. It's a lot of work, and I think Rarity would quite like a break from work that's filled with peace, quiet, and ice-cream, not having to take care of a child. That and, if she's so busy, she won't have the time to spend with the kid, and I don't think she'd be okay with that. I think this is the line of thinking a lot of people are following; as her business expands in the show, it becomes less likely she'd find time to start a family. When she had just one shop, she could probably have managed it. Now? Well, I don't doubt that she could do it, I just don't think she'd want to.
The other part of why I think she's better without children is just that, well, she's not great with disgusting things (no two ways about it, babies are messy as hell) and she's been shown to handle dealing with Sweetie Belle poorly at times so I just think she wouldn't like to put herself through that. I'm not sure if many other people see it this way because they think it's different when it's you own child as opposed to your younger sister, but that's how I see it so that's what's happening.
The thing with Sunset being an Alicorn? I don't know really, I just wanted her to be one. I think she'd return to Celestia once she realises she can't afford further education in the human world and Celestia would once more take her under her wing as a student. I think she'd still like to keep in touch with her human friends and, because of all the dimension hopping she'd be doing, she'd get more into the magic of that, thus extending the hoof of friendship to other dimensions. This would make her worthy of being an Alicorn and Celestia would go ahead and make her one. Or maybe Twililght, I don't know yet.
