“Look,” Amber said, tensing up. She pointed to the north.

“Out there, on the horizon. Do you see it?”

I squinted. A little red dot floated amidst the deep blue sky.

“It’s the dragon,” she said. “He’s heading this way. This is the one.”

The last few words rolled off her tongue like prickling needles. I could sense the hatred in her tone, perhaps not just for this dragon, but all the species.

“I know what Lotus told me. Try to negotiate. Matthew, you had best be careful. I don’t know how well that invisibility potion of yours will hold up,” Amber said, and looked directly at me—despite my hidden shape. She gave me a start, making me think the spell had already failed. But I still couldn’t see my own body.

“You don’t think negotiation will work?” I asked.

Amber frowned. “In short, no. Have you ever tried negotiating with a dragon before? It never works. But since Lotus wishes me to, I’ll try.”

“You’re going to fight the dragon, then.”

Amber gave a slight nod. “That’s why I told you to be careful. Stay back if you must watch. I can’t guarantee your safety.”

“I’ll cheer you on,” I said, trying to indicate a smile with my tone of voice.

“Don’t be an idiot,” she said, dead serious. She turned away. “The dragon has spotted us. And there’s no way it will let us leave now it knows we’re here, near its home.”
