Most of the time animals are just doing their thing.The interest humans have for them isn't mutual and if you don't disturb them they just ignore you. But sometimes it happens that they all of a sudden seem to 'freeze'.
They look you in the eyes, stop moving and take their time to observe you back. Not out of fear, not because I irritate them....it's as if there a little moment of fascination for this weird species called human.

Yep, it is! In fact, all three books (Golden Compass is based on a trilogy), are pretty good and exciting. I enjoyed it, because of the concept of the animals as your 'other spirit-half' (called a 'Daemon' ).
Though, I was surprised to hear that it's not popular in the US or something (but, in England it is) >.>;
I recommend it if you like fantasy and animals.
