How come whenever I try to use any other .ttf fonts they look all deformed at lower pt's? But fine at like 48pt.

I don't know. Have you ask in the Ubuntu forum? If it helps, my font setting is anti-aliasing on, use hinting slight. My dpi is 96. In your xorg.conf, try adding Option "DPI" "96 x 96" under Section "Monitor". See if that helps.

are you releasing the gtk port of the icons? i tried replacing folder.svg with the gaia folder icon but still i get the default icons

I got the awn from svn. To make the bar smaller, open gconf-editor --> apps --> avant-window-navigator --> bar and just change the bar_height to 24.
