It was a dark, quiet room. Unhatched eggs filled the little shelves of bedding, waiting for their moment to hatch. Each one had a number written on them: 001, 002, 003.... All the way to the last number, 100. A year of preparing, collecting lost eggs, was all about to be worth it....
In the center of the room sat a lonely blue egg, the number 000 written on it. The shell glowed a dim red in the dark, signaling it to be close to hatching. Voices whispered as the glow slowly got brighter and brighter, the shell beginning to crack. From the moment Zero was born, he knew the deep, red eyes of the one they called Mother. He looked right into them the first time his eyes opened, curious and innocent. "Welcome to the world, Zero. You shall be the first of many, welcome...." Mother had said, putting a black collar around his neck with a 'click', the number engraved into it. He would never get to know what it felt like to be without the collar after that, it was a part of him now. And in Mother's eyes, it was who he was now.
