Description It seems Intuned resembles her sire in more ways than just on the track! Can't you just see her going, "...What? "

Btw, just in case anyone was interested/cared/wants to question the awesomeness of Intuned as a racehorse, I use a detailed number chart that I made up along with the Random Number Generator to decide pretty much everything--coat color, gender, win/lose a race, how they retire/die, etc. It takes away the guessing aspect for me and makes everything a bit more realistic (as long as you stick to the outcome. Which I... usually do. ). If anyone is interested in hearing more, lemme know! I finally got my happy butt in gear and actually wrote my chart down so I wouldn't forget.

Intuned has turned into a giant of a filly, already nearly topping 16.3hh in the middle of her second year. She weighs an approx. of 1000lbs--as much as most of the average-sized colts--so she has some mass, but most of it was leg. And they are long legs, indeed. Elegant and deer-like, with lean but powerful muscles that flex with every step she takes. Those legs of hers carry her across the ground at alarmingly-fast speeds.

She is poetry in motion, a beauty to behold both on and off the track. She shows no signs of graying out, confirming our suspicions that she did not inherit her sire's graying gene. We predict she will remain this beautiful ebony color until the day she dies.

Race 1: Debutante Stakes (GIII); 6F
Seeing as how Intuned rips off her halter the minute she is released into her paddock, we figured she resembled her sire in the way she races, as well. We were right. When we tried working her in full gear, she freaked and balked and ran sideways like a crab.

So we stripped her of the traditional heavy BCC bridle, took off her running socks, and replaced her saddlepad with one with a finer, lighter weave that is normally used on heavier racehorses. In place of her bridle went one with three straps--one over the nose bridge, one behind her ears, and one under the throat. All the excess chains and buckles were removed until there was nothing left of the original bridal but the three straps (and the leather pieces connecting them, of course) and the traditional leather reins.

Those who did not know her sire, Ghost Pirate, like we did thought we were crazy. How could we possibly control such a large beast with so little tack? So despite her pedigree and gorgeous build, she was not the favorite when she broke from the great in her debut.

She broke slowly due to her size, but immediately shot to the front. We suspect that, had she been a distance runner, she would never win because the lets-play-catch-up would wear her out before the stretch, but because she favored sprinting, this worked in her favor; the surge from last to first got her adrenaline pumping and made her angry because she was in last, thus giving her the will to defeat all the nasty fillies in front of her.

This specific case was no different than her workouts and the mock races we put her through while she was still in pre-debut training. She powered past the other 9 fillies with such speed and grace that the crowd around us actually grew quiet; they hadn't expected the giant, loosely-held filly to start in last and then win a short 6 furlong race by 5 and a half lengths. And they definately didn't expect her to match the track record of 1:02:52 set down by Cashier's Dream in 2001.

But she did. And BCC Stables Racing Division gained another stakes winner.

Race 2: Hollywood Juvenile Championship Stakes (GIII); 6F
She is the Queen of 2-year-old fillies, but can she race against the boys? That is the question everyone was asking as Intuned loaded into the gate alongside 9 colts on the blistering Saturday morning in mid-July. She would be attempting something few fillies get a chance to--racing with the boys. If she wins, she would receive the rare honor of being listed in the same breath as great mares such as Terlingua, Althea, and the recent Necessary Evil.

As we expected, she loaded quietly and broke slowly but cleanly, then surged from last to first. The boys put up a fight this time, however, and she nearly lost her lead when a dark bay surged to overtake her. But Intuned held on, and won by a head. Her time was 1:08:80, which equals the times of Terlingua in '78 and King Glorious in '88. The record is 1:08:60.

Oh lordy.

Race 3: Adirondack Stakes (GII); 6.5F
The free-running filly went off as a 5:2 favorite in the Adirondack and didn't disappoint. However, the extra half a furlong and extra grade denied her the wide-margin win we saw in the Debutante. This time, it was a photo-finish between her and a small gray. But she did win. Her time was 1:17:30.

Race 4: Hollywood Prevue Stakes (GIII); 7F
We skipped the Breeder's Cup and let Intuned have a well-needed rest, before storming back for her final start as a 2-year-old in mid-November to sweep the Hollywood Prevue. It is the longest distance she has raced to date, at 7 furlongs, but we figured she could handle it. And she did, against a field of 7 colts and one other filly.

Her time was 1:21:30 and she won by a neck over the same dark bay colt she battled in the Hollywood Juvenile. A fitting farewell to her 2-year-old season, don't you think?
