Background Story
Winslet nuzzled the newborn colt, urging him to his feet. It had been a difficult birth, and she was tired. The humans puttered frantically about outside her stall. She understood the fear they felt. It had been two hours and yet her colt had yet to stand.

Those pale blue eyes looked back at her and he bleated sadly, but his crooked legs wouldn't work properly. He knew they wouldn't, and he was too tired to attempt to rise again, even with his mother snorting fearfully in his ear.

5 days later...

"We can't afford to keep this colt around," the barn manager said sadly to the elderly groom. "His mama rejected him when she realized he couldn't stand, and I don't have the time to feed him from the bottle every two hours like he needs." The manager shrugged. "I'm going to call the vet and have him put down."

A little girl, approximately 9 years old, tugged on her grandfather's overalls. The elderly groom bent down to hear her. "I can take care of him Papa," she said eagerly. But the groom frowned.

"No, Beth, I can't have you running around out here by yourself. Besides, he's useless. He'll never be able to walk. It's more humane to put him down now."

"...They said I'd never walk, too, Papa," Beth said quietly. The groom flinched and looked down at her legs. Those pretty, thin little legs supported by metal on either side.

"I can straighten his legs, Papa."

"How?"

"By giving him the will to live."

2 years later...

The colt and the 11 year old girl stood side by side, both sweaty and exhausted. They had just completed their training for the morning.

They had improved. In only a month, Skyy and Beth had gone from knocking down every fence to only knocking down one. Soon Skyy would be old enough to start competing in the hunter class. Beth couldn't wait!

On the sidelines stood Beth's grandfather and the barn manager. Both marveled at the brace-free, straight legs of their charges--both human and equine.

Based off a true story. Just written for fun.

And no, this beast won't pass on his crooked legs to his offspring.
