(Think Go-go from Big Hero 6) This rubber material acts as extra protection against the occasional wipe-out on the road as well as defense against things like knives and bullets. The knives get stuck in this rubber, bullets bounce completely off. If his skin is thick enough, he can also peel it off into strips to use as emergency tethering or rope, but it's kinda nasty and he doesn't like to do it.
