Description
In 2018 West Virginia's first Renaissance Festival sprung up near Lewisburg in Greenbriar County. Last year I dressed as a medieval lady... in June... it was unbearably hot. This year I decided to go a different route. I saw a lot of giant fluffy tulle and scrap skirts on Pinterest, yes, of course: Pinterest, and said "Oh, I can do that!"
Well, as the story goes, it doesn't look exactly like the example, but its darn well close enough in this case. This dress started out as a retro 1960's pattern from vogue patterns. I turned that dress inside out so that all of the seams are contained within the fairy dress. After fitting it onto the mannequin (Priscilla), I started with the skirt, tacking on and sewing down about five thick layers of varying lengths of tulle and fabric cut into squares for better draping. Next came pinning the bodice down. Each layer of the bodice is folded and hand sewn/tacked onto the base dress beneath, that took a while.
Finishing touches! For my birthday I received a Cricuit machine that cut fabric, I made flat fabric flowers and topped them with pearls for pink accents on the skirt and made 3D flowers with button centers and attached buttons to the bodice. As a side note: There are pockets hidden somewhere within this ball of poof. The belt, ahh the belt, it looks so pretty. I thought that the clasps were metal and they seem to be, but as soon as I put it on Priscilla one of the hooks broke off and I was unable to wear it. This year, and wouldn't you know it, it wasn't hot at all at the faire, in fact, it threatened (and did a few times) to drizzle all day. It was very pleasant.
News of the day: I won the costume contest this year! All of my hard work got me... a T-Shirt. Oh well, I'm pleased with my T-Shirt.
