Its a cool idea but the problem is that you do not know what piece is what.
Has to be obvious to be playable.
Maybe for version 2.0 you could give the ponies some of the trappings of each chess piece?
Maybe ponies could wear hats with the different chess piece tops?
Knights are on 2 hooves, everyone else is on four?
For fun, the hats don't have to be straight on their heads, the pawns could have their hats at an angle. This way you know what piece is what and you keep the pony chars.

If you wanted Twi to stand next to Rainbow, you should have switched Fleur and Rarity. The King goes on the right side, or really, on the square of his colour. Or... I dunno, but I know that the Kings should be opposite.
As it is, I love how you used fillies and Gummy as pawns XD And all the other pets, except Wynonna.

I would play. I do agree it would be difficult to remember which is what because it isn't uniform, but that could be interesting. Besides that though, I love chess, and this would be a really cool set to play with. Good job man.
