Kise didn’t think much of it when he invited you to watch him practice. Normally you’d come up with an excuse not to, whether it was club activities or homework… There was always a reason. He was happy you chose to finally attend, hoping he could woo you with his skills.
However, the entire time, you only had eyes on one person, and it wasn’t him.
No, it was his captain.
If Kise wasn’t a perceptive person, he wouldn’t have noticed the small differences in your body language. Unfortunately for him, he was very attentive, especially when it concerned you. He would notice the small spark in your hues whenever he mentioned the team, more specifically his captain’s name.
You’d even made more time to attend practice.
Kasamatsu didn’t have a clue about your feelings, nor did he understand why Kise would seem a bit moody each time you were around. He thought having you come would boost his moral. It seemed to do the opposite, but the poor raven-haired didn’t know what to do. If he could help.
What infuriated Kise was how you seemed to be showing your feelings so vividly, so clearly, yet his captain didn’t suspect anything wrong. He sighs, shooting one last ball before stopping, only nodding once at his captain before heading to the showers. Could this get any worse?
One winter’s day, it did.
Everyone had been invited to Moriyama’s place for a Christmas party, one of the rare occasions everyone could meet up and just hang out normally. Kise had chose to invite you as his guest, despite knowing Kasamatsu would be there.
He didn’t miss the way you seemed so nervous once he walked in the room. And he was wondering when you’d act on these feelings you seem to be ignoring. He was thankful for the distraction of his other senpais because otherwise he feel he’d be drowning in the somewhat tense atmosphere.
The night had trudged on; Moriyama and Hayakawa were the loudest, for different reasons of course. But he only chuckled while Kobori and Nakamura had shook their heads, unsure of how to handle the two. The blonde had excused himself, saying he had to go to the bathroom.
When he exited, he walked past the kitchen, and that’s when it happened.
“I.. I really like you, Kasamatsu-kun.”
He felt himself halt his steps, golden hues glued to the floor as he waited with baited breath for his captain’s answer. It seemed time was mocking him, testing him, and he really hated how his breathing came to a stop.
There was a brief hesitance in his voice, but the words were loud and clear to the blonde. “I.. I like you too, ____.”
He swallowed, trying not to make a sound as he peaked around the corner, knowing he was only torturing himself. But, he still did it anyway. With widened eyes, he watched as you grabbed his shirt lightly, pulling him to your height as your lips touched Kasamatsu’s briefly. A tight knot formed in his gut as he stiffened a bit, but relaxed under your touch, a shaky hand cupping your cheek as his eyes slid shut, returning the embrace.
Kise was happy it didn’t last long, because he wasn’t sure if his heart could take it. But he found it shattering more when he noticed the happiest smile you’d ever worn in your life, accompanied by a tender look from his captain.
Before he could be caught, he found himself walking back to the living room, putting on a fake smile the entire night. As much as he tried hating his captain, for taking you away from him, he couldn’t find it in him to do so. Because if he was honest with himself, there was not one person he would trust you with than him.
You were never his to begin with.
