I've always wondered at what, if anything, happened between Angel and Alan Gabriel in the past. I mean, they're both spies for the Union, so they must have known each other for a while. Right?Well, this is my lame attempt at depicting them before the events of the Big O anime take place. I've toyed with writing a comic or fic about a younger Angel, when she's first sent off to Paradigm City by the Union, along with Alan Gabriel. Personally, I think they might have been partners or something, but that's just me. I don't think anything else happened between them, but I think that, at one time, they might have been very good friends, before Alan got turned into a cyborg.. or whatever he is now.
So, the pen-and-ink kick continues! I tell you what, ballpoint pen is really nice for light hatchmarks. I actually did the ballpoint last this time as opposed to first.. and discovered, after coloring this, that without the little ballpoint hatchmarks, everything looked really flat.
The background (if you can call it that) was pretty much redrawn from a page in the artbook I found that has Roger and Dorothy standing on Big O's hand with a very simple background of Paradigm City. I liked the look of just outlined buildings with flat shading, so I took it. I'm really enjoying doing black and white art lately! Color just didn't feel like it would work well on this piece, so.. there you have it.

I didn't comment before but I did fav it. I really like this and you're theory is really plausible about Angel and Alan. I like that, even though this isn't "cyborg" Alan, you kept his eyes shaded. This is really nice!

Back to the innocent days β¦even though they were already packing heat. ^^ (just for expressive purposes, I think red seems to complement the black & white very well - a perfect option here would be that notorious red balloon which seems to be the Union's calling card)
And yeeeah, that would be an interesting back story to dive into. You notice how heisitant Angel is with the notion of shooting Alan in Act: 21. That kinda struck me as a real inability to betray her comrade β¦because she's known him and the Union much longer, mayhaps? (Ooo-hoo, that sets up many more FUN moments like Angel trying to stop Alan from undergoing his transfiguration and what event might ultimately cause him to slip beyond her persuasionsβ¦ The ball just keeps rolling. ^^)

Aaah! I didn't even think about the balloon until you mentioned it! And I'm all about that red balloon-- my art professors are starting to think I'm nuts because I keep working it into my school stuff. Maybe I'll just go back and add it in.
I love speculating about their past. Whatever happened to Alan to make him like he is now, I'm sure (or at least, I hope) Angel tried to stop him. Oh man.. someone write this fic, stat! I want to do it, but I'm no good at filling out, y'know, the actual story. I have a beginning and end in mind, but.. that middle part is hard.
