This was my final film project in animation college. I went to Vancouver Film School and this is freaking old lol. Very first animation of mine other than random line tests done in the classroom. The three characters featured here are all from my published graphic novel, Shadow Magic although it was hard to come up with a story that would begin and conclude within 90 seconds so I chose to kind of display a bit of the relationships between these characters. We had 10 weeks to do it from start to finish. You can tell I concentrated more on the characters work than the backgrounds. Did I suck at drawing characters back then or what =__=.
I really don't know why I made the dialogue in Japanese. I know it's not perfect but I felt like being adventurous at the time. I was in a homestay with some international students while I was at VFS including 2 Japanese girls. One of them helped me to arrange the dialogue correctly.
The animation was done all by hand with traditional animation paper, scanned and digitally inked and painted using USAnimation (now known as Harmony by ToonBoon). Editing and sound mixing done in Final Cut Pro.

I just found the old MPG of this on one of my archive cds from way back when. I must have gotten it off of your website. I seem to remember that you had big plans to turn it into a serial.

lolololol that's pretty awesome! Thanks so much for saying that! Yups, we worked pretty hard pitching and traveling overseas to studios and whatnot and after several years of effort we hit a catch-22 situation. Niether investors or broadcasters would budge without the other making a commitment so... yeah. Around the same time personal stuff happened and I quit the scene for 5 years. Slowly beginnning a 'comeback' this year. At least the graphic novel was published by a large distributor so I can't complain. Time to start poking and prodding again =3. I am sincerely teary-eyed that you remember it, and I hope you will keep an eye out for more! I finally have the equipment to do the damn thing myself lol.

I think its great that you pretty much finished it..
but your animation class let you draw anime? I graduated from An animation program where anime was pretty much a sin and I could see why ( minus a few here and there that actually are good)
Your characters bodies were very flat, poses weak.. the phoenix flying was nice.
But to me that was about it. I know you've improved since but my god you should not have done an anime short.. no one in the industry..is gonna wanna see that on a demo reel. I suggest working on something NOT anime to put on one if you want a real job.. (however if you did get one thennnnn good for you~)
from the other comments it seems to have done well.. because the majority of the people on here are anime lovers. And it appeared on a few tv stations? Wow. To be honest Im really surprised at that.
anyway that is my bit for this. Your art NOW has gotten a lot better.. the eyes are melting off of the face as much and stuff~ so good job, keep it up.

Hahaha yeah!! Thanks! I really appreciate your comment and critiques^^. Actually we were very much discouraged from drawing anime. I was one of those stubborn kids who didn't care what other people thought. Of course, I had to complete all the assignments so not everyrhing was anime. I was heavily into disney before I started animation school. Since I was the first one to make an anime final film, it got a lot of attention at the time. Time crunch can really hinder quality too- but I know I really sucked back then LOOL I think I did this when I was 18 or 19.
And yes, I did work in a few animation studios around town, however, contract work isn't a way to make a living (at least for me), hence I left the field. I prefer a steady income =]. I'm more interested on furthering my own empire anyway hahaa- then again I suppose most creators do. Although I admit I didnt' mind working on The Buzz on Maggie- it pleasantly surprised me for a Flash Disney series.
Anyhoo, I'm rather familiar with the industry since I ran an animation studio for a while- yeah I know, I'm too ambitious for my own good.. all the pre-prod was done but man, it's not easy finding investors in Canada for the arts. You woudlnt' believe the catch-22. Eventually I'll get around to doing it all myself

There's usually a reason why animation schoools discourage people from doing anime-related things, and if you don't realize why then I can't imagine running your own studio will work very well.
